Android Kikaider Volume 02: Conflicting Hearts

Jiro is a real mess right now, how does one come to grips with the world when you believe yourself a monster and even your “so called” brothers abandon you?

Episode 05: City of Rain

Jiro is now being sought by the city’s police force due the amount of destruction that he has been seen around; but much like his “sister” the police is having no luck in finding him. While sitting around, Jiro meets Miyuki, a self-described caretaker of “strays”, she takes Jiro into her home. Telling him about her past, she relates another “stray” that she cared for, an injured man who reminds her of Jiro.

Now cut to the “mystery man”, a thug who is hired to work for Dark (a mysterious organization). His job: help plant explosive devices around the city that will go off simultaneously flattening the entire area. Not without conscience, he heads to Miyuki’s home to warn her only to run into Jiro. At this moment, the man is attacked by another of Prof. Gill’s robots (Yellow Jaguar) who is working for the organization Dark and is trying to keep the plan running. Jiro saves the man, and convinces him that Miyuki is still in love with him. Agreeing to stop the attack, the man runs off to stop the bombs while Jiro battles Yellow Jaguar.

While Jiro and the mystery man are successful in completing their goals, the man is killed at the end of his mission by a mystery assailant. Jiro is upset that the man was unable to return to Miyuki and now resolves to do something about his feelings towards Mitsuko.

Episode 06: Negative Fragments

Mitsuko receives new information about her father’s research from

the detective, it appears that her father’s work was being funded by Prof. Gill himself. More importantly, Prof. Gill is the leader of the mysterious organization “Dark” that tried to blow up the city in the last episode. Any additional information will be slow to be revealed, as all of the detective’s sources are guarded or at least fearful for their lives. As she learns this information, she is abducted by another android, Golden Bat. Like Jiro, Golden Bat has two forms: a regular human form which resembles a caped blade but can transform into a battle mode which is a large, well, golden bat. Golden Bat sweeps Mitsuko away from her home into an abandoned house surrounded by a cemetery. The abandoned home is actually the former home of the Komyoji family, and Mitsuko experiences a series of flashbacks to her youth growing up with her mother and father.

Claiming to be a precursor to Jiro, G.B. also possesses a conscience program and explains to Mitsuko the extent of torment that Jiro must be feeling at this point. However, G.B. explains that the conscience program is as only as effective as the person using it; as he relays, 100 people will have 100 different consciences depending upon their own beliefs as to what is evil. As such, G.B. works for Prof. Gill and has agreed to destroy Jiro. Also of interest are a pair of new revelations: 1.) that Prof. Gill was instrumental in creating Mitsuko’s family as he introduced her parents 2.) Doctor Komyoji was married twice, having a previous wife and a son Ichiro that were killed in accidents.

As Mitsuko was kidnapped, G.B. took time to inform Jiro that he had taken her, and told him where he can find them. The episode ends with Jiro reaching the house and getting ready to head towards it. Wew, a whole lot of plot, but not too much action.

Episode 07: The Afterglow of Regret

Episode starts with a flashback where Doctor Komyoji is working in his lab with Ichiro, but during the activation of a robot, Ichiro is electrocuted by his panel. Mitsuko now laments the loss of a brother that she never knew, and Jiro approaches the house only to run across the series of traps that Golden Bat has set up for his opponent. Running the gambit of traps, from exploding tombstones that home in on a target to a room of cyborg bats that electrocute their enemies, Jiro manages to survive the attacks until G.B. agrees to face him. Now battling, Jiro refuses to transform in front of Mitsuko because he doesn’t want her to see him as a monster… which is going to be a problem with fighting G.B. who doesn’t have such a restriction.

The battle isn’t going particularly well for Jiro who is barely staying alive in the fight, but the battle comes to an abrupt end when one of the projectiles aimed at Jiro veers towards a defenseless Mitsuko. Not wanting her harmed, Jiro transforms to save her, but before he can get there, G.B. sacrifices himself by stepping into the projectile. G.B. is finished off by a man sitting on a motorcycle who races off before G.B. can confirm an important piece of information.

So far the series has run the gambit; one moment trite and predictable and the next moment a showing of depth and plot that keeps me intrigued. At this point, I’m not too sure how the show is going to finish or continue, but how the momentum has got me interested.
