Argentosoma Volume 06: Annihilation
With the sighting of the latest invader that will most likely destroy the planet, there’s really no point in preamble, is there?
Episode
23: Destruction and Courage Now that the remnants of the FUNERAL team have evaded capture, they begin to plot the recapture of their home. David Lawrence donates his SARG to the team, but leaves the team to engage the base. The plan is as basic as it gets: the cruiser will fly low under radar and fake an emergency allowing them access to the base’s airspace. Once in the airspace, Guenevere will deploy in their one SARG to occupy the defenses while Ryu and Hattie enter the base to free Frank… Yuri… the eX-1… Mr. Elf… the big guy!
Meanwhile, the command staff is furiously planning for the latest alien invasion and it looks as though the current plan is to use the Ulysses project as a giant nuclear missile that will knock the alien’s trajectory away from the Earth and allow them some time to develop a second plan. The council is informed that the Earth would be destroyed before the alien arrived due the mass of the alien which would devastate the surface of the planet killing. However, the plan is interrupted by David Lawrence who threatens the council with a release of the information surrounding the FUNERAL incident and asks for additional time before their plan is implemented.

The plan to free Frank starts off well with Guenevere disabling all of the surface defenses on the first pass and closing off the access ports for the TODs (the black SARGs). But then things go bad and Hattie and Ryu are caught by guards while infiltrating the base. They face execution at the hands of the traitor.

Another packed episode. The traitor holds Ryu and Hattie at gunpoint, and he suddenly betrays the guards by locking them out of room that they are in. Telling Ryu and Hattie to go on ahead, Dan heads towards the brig area and frees Commander Ines. On the surface, Guenevere is trying to battle the alien but is not having much success. To even the odds, Sue takes control of one of the damaged ZODs and joins the fray. Guenevere spends the entire fight closing on the alien while trying to save the captured pilot on-board the alien. Her SARG manages to free the pilot before failing due to sustained damage. At this point the alien unleashes its’ primary attack, a supernova with itself at the center. Unable to move, Guenevere and the saved pilot are now directly in harm’s way.
In the base, Ryu and Hattie are unable to get into “Jail” because of the changed passwords. However, they manage to access the room once Walton appears carrying Dan’s security badge in his mouth. Now releasing Frank’s bindings, Hattie pleads with Frank to have him wake up and help save them from the alien threat. The interaction between Ryu and Hattie during this section once again illustrates the damage to Ryu’s psyche, as he becomes frustrated with Frank not responding and even attacks Hattie. After having another mental breakthrough with Hattie, Ryu realizes his mistakes and Frank then finally activates. Frank begins glowing a bright yellow, and all of his body except for the eye in his chest slowly vaporizes. At the same time, all remaining alien pieces scattered around the world including the ZARGs and the attacking alien vaporize and converge around Frank’s body. Now reforming into an alien body (like the attackers), Frank bids his friends farewell and leaves the planet.
Episode
25: Love and Rebirth The “true” final episode of Argentosoma. Now 6 years later, the members of the FUNERAL team have developed in their own ways. Hattie, has just completed her doctoral studies and is getting ready to leave on a shuttle mission from an orphanage that she has been helping to run. Hattie is to be the mission specialist on the up-coming flight of the Ulysses and is preparing by saying her good-byes before the launch.
Meeting with her surrogate mother Ines, they reminisce in front of the grave of Guenevere. Ines suggests to Hattie that she think about what she wants to say to Ryu once she sees him. Continuing her visits, Hattie returns to the FUNERAL base which is now being run by Dan at the rank of Lt. Commander. The base has finally been able to duplicate the alien technology, and he is out testing the first man-made SARG. The reunion continues on the ground with a meeting between Sue, now Dan’s wife and mother of their first child Guenevere. After arriving at the launching area for the Ulysses, Hattie is greeted by the mission commander, Michael Hartland.
Ryu
on the other hand has not had the good life of the others, as he has
been incarcerated for some unexplained crime. His parole review comes
forward as he has been pardoned of his charges and expected to join the
Ulysses crew as a first officer. Instead deciding to return to his old
home, he faces the ghosts of his past. After seeing Maki’s final
message, Ryu decides to join the flight and meets up with the Ulysses
before take-off.
Extra
Episode: Alone and by Myself The
episode that was trimmed from the series, it’s a definite stand alone
episode. Dan, Guenevere, Sue, and Michael are sent down to Antarctica to
intercept an alien invader. While searching for the alien and fighting
it, Sue ends up causing an avalanche that traps both her SARG and the
alien at the bottom of a giant crevasse. The episode is pretty dull, it
spends the entire time with Sue trying to get her SARG up the side of
the crevasse (because her thrusters are damaged) and inter-cuts the
action with flashbacks to her upbringing. It’s quite gratuitous and
really doesn’t give any insights into Sue at all.
After watching the entire series, I’m sated. It certainly won’t be the penultimate robot anime, but it definitely had some great twists and turns. Definitely better than working.
