.hack//Legend of the Twilight Volume 02: Enter The Nightmare (DVD)

A companion lost! The group of four who are behind the disruptions in The World decide that Shugo must be eliminated. After all, he is the one with Kite’s legendary bracelet, the only item that can defeat them. Once they dispatch a forged message supposedly from Aura, they just have to sit back and wait. Shugo and the others, behaving as heroes should, go to help Aura. Before they realize that it’s a trap, one of their number disappears! Rena is gone!

Overcome with grief and guilt, Shugo swears that he will save his sister, but doesn’t know where to begin looking. Everyone else pledges to help. But time is running out! The game has become deadly serious.

And as the criminal masterminds continue their attacks on Shugo, they attract the attention of the Cerulean Knights, CC Corporation’s Guardians of Order. Shugo is now a suspect! And, as The World swirls in chaos, a character from the past reappears to once more defend justice.

So “The World” has been established once more, and the characters are all pretty much defined so it looks as though the main plotline is going to jump into the forefront right away.

Episode 05: Mansion of Terror

The episode starts off with a trip to a beach… (geez are we sure that this is a .hack show?) but the big happenings are going on in the real world. A group of four gamers who hack the game have decided that their biggest threat is Kite and his data drain ability. As such, they have decided to try and neutralize this threat and have drawn him to a world that they control by making him think that Aura has tried to call for help. This world is a haunted mansion, and trying to prove that she isn’t

scared, Rena goes off on her own. While searching, she is caught in the trap meant for Shugo. Shugo defeats yet another hacked monster that the group has created, but is unable to stop his sister from being taken away. On a side note, it is the first showing of the Cerulean Knights as they confront Lord Balmung – they appear to have a nasty streak and do not show the restraint that the Crimson Knights held under Lady Subaru.

Episode 06: Trap of the Hot Steaming Water

With Rena missing, Shugo leads the team in a search for his missing sister and employs techniques straight from the Little Rascals playbook. After spending some time looking, Shugo receives an anonymous email to head to another world; and not having any better leads, he heads there with his team. Upon arriving, the group comes across a outdoor hot springs (now I’m sure that this isn’t .hack) and they decide to take a break there before continuing to search for Rena. While they rest, Rena apparently appears but Shugo thinks that she isn’t acting right and challenges the person… who then reveals itself to be another hacked monster. Once the battle was won, Shugo receives a phone call from his mother… Rena has fallen into a coma.

Episode 07: Twilight Moon

The team meets up to discuss the situation and Lord Balmung tells the team about the “dot hackers”, the original team led by Kite and Black Rose that saved “The World” previously. Balmung also mentions that the coma that Rena has fallen into isn’t an isolated case, a series of people falling into comas has been happening and it echoes the cases that happened previously. Elsewhere, Rena has been re-awakened by Aura and she is now able to move around in the game but is unable to log out (Tsubasa syndrome). Shugo has come up with a daring plan… he intends to let a hacked monster kill him, and he believes that the imbedded data from where the monster takes him will allow him to find and eventually rescue his sister. As the plan is being implemented, the Cerulean Knights arrive and delete the latest monster and also inform Balmung that he has been removed from this case, with the authority in this matter being transferred to the Knights.

Episode 08: The Solitary Knight

Balmung continues to use his power to search for the missing persons despite his “transfer of command”. In the meantime, the Cerulean Knights continue to flex their muscle by deleting numerous players who have been manipulating their items. Shugo continues to search not only for his sister but for more hacked monsters that would allow him to implement his previous plan; but all he is doing is continually leveling up. The Cerulean Knights have now developed an interest in Shugo once they discover that he has the data drain ability and then try to capture him (for deletion) but he is saved by the Silver Knight Crim who fights with the Knights that have tarnished his previous title. Although he helps Shugo escape, Crim is captured and deleted. At the same time, Balmung has been stripped of his title in CC Corporation for continuing to search for the missing people and ignoring his new duties.

After 2 discs of .hack//sign: Legend of the Twilight, I’m finding the pacing of this series more palatable and enjoyable. Good stuff.
