E's Otherwise Volume 5: The Sacrament of Calvaria (DVD)

With the Raphael and the rest of the children set free from the sinister clutches of Ghibelline and his church, better known as “paradise”, Kai embarks on the next phase of this mission. He is off to find the secret of the Sacrament of Calvaria. However he is not alone in his quest. Yuuki, Maria, and Asuka are also in on the hunt. And following them are Sherry and Kyou, along with Maxim. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the guerillas.

Meanwhile, Shen-Long is starting really freak about what has happened to his sister, Shin-Lu, and her “strengthening procedure”. He is frantically trying to find answers and seems to be getting help from a most unusual accomplice. Back at Ashurum, Eiji is realizing that he might have his hands a bit too full.

Things are starting to come to a head, and with this many psychics involved it can only mean one thing: things are gonna get worse before they can get better. You don’t want to miss this exciting volume of E’s Otherwise. It will literally blow you away!

Kai’s separation from psychics while in Gald is definitely coming to an end with force now. Everyone is searching him out, and now that the Rebels are actively looking to get Asuka it looks like things are coming to a head.

Episode 19: As You Are Guided

Shin-Lu runs (err… flies) back to the protective arms of her brother, and Kai is trying to convince them not to return to Ashurum because of the mental effects that the treatments have been having on the AESES people. Before he can plead his case, Kyou decides to press the attack and keep Kai from talking to Shin-Lu or Shen-Long. Kai doesn’t want to fight him, so he keeps evading. Before Kyou can press the attack, Sherry appears and tells Kyou to forget him and come along. Kai heads back to find the twins, but they are long gone. The twins have returned to Ashurum, and Shin-Lu has been brought to the medical facility for more treatment.

Back at the house, Yuuki is in bed and has been bandaged to heal from his fight against Maxim. Maria and Asuka have kept watch over him, and now that he’s awakened, Asukawants to help Maria and go with her to the Rebel base. Yuuki is

against it, but eventually relents seeing as he needs to talk to the leader once again and he can act as a bodyguard for Asuka. Maria takes a circuitous route so that she can properly apologize to Yuuki for the situation, but it takes Asuka to calm him down and start being a little more accepting of what Maria wants – she needs Asuka’s powers and wants both of them to join the rebel cause. As the group is walking around, they pick up a pair of unwanted followers: Sherry and Kyou.

Episode 20: Intent and Fate

From a note left by Yuuki and Asuka, Kai has learned that they are heading to the Rebel’s base, but he intends to follow them, but he doesn’t know the location of the base. So, he heads back to Cardinal Ghibelline and asks for the location. The Cardinal isn’t particularly forthcoming (and he doesn’t actually know) but he does have an interesting captive: Leonid. He was planting listening devices when he was caught by the guards, and now the Cardinal is planning on executing him. Kai can’t allow that so he sneaks back and rescues him, and asks Leonid about the base. He agrees to show Kai an underground passage to the base as well as some of the secret passages beneath the city of Gald.

Meanwhile, Yuuki’s group is heading to the base via ship, so he gets help from his friends Bud and Rikumi who run a cargo ship that they can berth on. And they are going to have some unwanted company on board the vessel: Sherry and Kyou have also gotten passage. The travel is relatively uneventful until they run across the path of an Ashurum submarine – Asuka notices the crest on the vessel and remembers that it’s just like on Kai’s uniform. Maria now knows that Kai is a former Ashurum agent. They head into the façade for the base, and head into the bowels where the true base is hidden, but they are being shadowed by Sherry and Kyou (but worse is the presence of Maxim, who also is in the wings). As they meet the forward guards, they have brought a book for Yuuki – the last will and Testament of the leader, who reveals that he’s actually the former Church leader of Gald who was closest to finding the Sacrament of Calvaria. With that valuable piece out, Sherry and Kyou make their move and try to take the book.

In Ashurum, Shen-Long is searching for information about the adjustments that have been made to his sister by the medical staff. While sneaking about the library, he is caught by the younger Chigaya who gets him to talk about his relationship with his sister and how he is hurt by the changes in her personality. Excellent episode that moved well between the 3-4 storylines running simultaneously.

Episode 21: Cruel Flame

With the attack in the tunnel, Maria pulls Asuka to safety in the base but Yuuki is locked outside with the guards who met them. He wants in the base immediately so he can protect Asuka, but the men want to talk to him first. They explain that the leader left the church and formed the rebels for the sole purpose of gathering psychics to protect them. But their conversation is cut short, Kyou is attacking again and he is more than a match for the guards and Yuuki. One of the guards hands Yuuki the book to safeguard it, but Sherry snatches it and disappears. Kyou intends to kill all of them, but Yuuki is fighting back as aggressively as he can. Just as Kyou is about to finish Yuuki, Kai appears and takes the fight to him. He changes his fighting style and freezes Kyou in place – but he senses trouble inside the base, so he runs in.

Inside the base, Maria and Asuka both learn that they are orphans who have been raised by surrogate families – Maria believes that Asuka can help her grandfather, and she’s going to take her to him. The leader meanwhile has been approached by Maxim, who intends to kill him. Maxim is choking the leader, but he sees the pain that Maxim has endured up to this point in his life (because of the brain washing) and forgives him. Kai appears in the room and attacks Maxim, but the man is still too strong to defeat and he’s unable to get the upper hand. Sherry appears, and grabs the leader – so now Ashurum has both the leader and the will.

Episode 22: Rhapsody

Sherry hands over the will to Eiji, and the leader has been placed into suspension and taken into the medical ward of AESES. In Gald, the trio have returned home and are in the process of cleaning up the house but an angry visitor arrives – Maria has arrived and she’s furious at Kai. She believes that Kai killed her grandfather and wants vengeance. Kai is leery about attacking a hurt person, so he only defends himself – but as she presses the attack, Yuuki steps in to help, and she blows up his gun. This prompts Kai to get offensive, and he knocks her unconscious. After she recovers from her injuries, Kai goes to talk – she pressures Kai for his stance of neutrality, he doesn’t want to hurt people with his powers, but Maria is disgusted with him for allowing psychics to be used as weapons and refusing to do anything. He offers to let her kill him, but she instead leaves and heads back to the base.

Shin-Lu has returned from the hospital once again, and this time her personality change is drastic. Now aggressive, she snarls at Shen-Long and bears no resemblance to his sister at all. He brings his concerns to Chigaya, and she promises to look into the changes. Eiji has come to Gald and his first stop is at the Church – he visits Cardinal Ghibelline and delivers the will as a token of good faith. He believes that the Cardinal will eventually become the head of the Church and wants his support when he ascends.

Back at the base, the rebels have acquired Eiji’s travel plans, and they intend to try and take him captive – Maria is going to join the operation.

A really good disc of E’s Otherwise. It’s going to have a good finish, I can feel it. Definitely looking forward to the finale coming soon.
