Evangelion Unit 00 Prototype by Kaiyodo Toys
Continuing in the awesome Evangelion action figure series from Japanese-import Kaiyodo is the Unit 00 Prototype, better known as Rei's Eva from the hit anime series - an enormous robot mimicking a slender human figure.
Evangelion Unit 00 was originally the prototype Evangelion that Rei II piloted, except that it rejected her and tried to kill both her and Gendo - Unit 00, an enormous yellow Evangelion with a single red eye. This Eva was later replaced with a similar model of different colors; a blue and white carapace with a single sharp green eye. Following in the source material of the anime, Kaiyodo created two different Unit 0's - one of the original Yellow color scheme, and one Blue; not variants to each other, as each has a slightly different sculpt and all new weapons, but each with several variants (including a metallic Unit 00 painted in stunning gold). Today I'm looking at my personal favorite, the Metallic Variant of the Blue Unit 00.

Unit 00 looks thinner than Unit 01 and 02, but I suspect this is because of the broad shoulders and comparatively small head. The sculpt is excellent, supporting lots of detail and excellent paint aps. For an example of how well Kaiyodo have detailed Unit 00, check out it's 'faceless' head. The dazzling chainmail and sharp metallic 'helmet' and glowing green eye are all superb, keeping up Kaiyodo's unbreakable talent for paint and detail. The sculpt is slightly different to the other Eva's, giving it a uniqueness. For example, the head is detachable but reattaches in two different places so that Unit 00's head can look down or straight ahead. The articulation is also unique |

- with the same impressive shoulder and leg articulation as the other Eva's (allowing Unit 00 to hold and attack with all of it's many accessories), it also includes a diagonal cut-joint in the midsection; the added poseability gives Unit 00 additional movement to crawl along the ground, look way into the sky, or down at a tiny person on the ground. It also allows Unit 00 additional playability with it's biggest, most bad-ass weapon - the gigantic Positron Canon. This is easily the best weapon of Unit 00's arsenal. It looks like an enormous sniper rifle and is about 6" long, beautifully detailed as a perfect representation of that from the series. Unit 00 is best holding it; whether it be holding in two hands aiming ahead, firing into the sky or crawling on the ground like in the anime, Unit 00 is right at home with it. This is what you'll be posing Unit 00 with - also included are several extra hands, the power cable (which inserts into Unit 00's back), an awesome little N2 Mine, and a strange double-handed pulse rifle weapon. But all of these have nothing on that 20x Positron Canon. It's an imposing marvel of an accessory. Kaiyodo have done it for all the Evangelions, and Eva Unit 00 is no different. This is one fine figure, with all the articulation and accessories you could dream of, plus the added creativity that makes the Eva's great. Playability is surprisingly high with Eva Unit 00 as well - not as fragile as Unit 01, but still with many accessories easily lost (I recommend keeping all the extra parts and weapons from the Evas in one container, as you'll never lose them and all of the Eva's accessories work with all of the Evas). Forget just one figure from this series, buy them all; I have all the metallic variants and I adore them. Highly recommended (two big thumbs up!). - Shocka (March 29, 2003) |
