Gantz Volume 10: Endgame (DVD)

He’s a dead man walking, yet somehow Kei Kuruno has managed to survive every lethal trick the Gantz has thrown at him through four bloody games. But now Kei’s on his own, with no one he can trust at his back. With the rules turned against him, facing a pair of murderers who kill for pleasure, it’s time for a final desperate gamble. It’s Kuruno versus the Gantz in the last deadly volume of Gantz!

Well, so far the story has gone quite divergent from the manga but we’re promised an ending by the end of the series one way or another, so let’s go for it! 3 episodes to the end, it’s crunch time!

Episode 24: No Labyrinth Is Inescapable

As Kanda is being held hostage, Kei is in a defensive position trying to resolve the images running through his mind of how many of his friends and former comrades have died through the course of the missions. Despite the rising passion of wanting to kill Kei, Kanda speaks up and says that she believes him. Kei starts to superimpose images of Kei-chan in his mind and ends up disarming Kaziura and running off with Kanda in his arms. The rest of the team starts to faction now as Furata demands to know whether Kaziura and Muroto killed the homeless people as Kei said; Kaziura’s anger gives away the answer but Muroto starts acting and states that he was pressured into doing it. The stakes are raising as both sides are starting to point guns. Meanwhile, Kei sends Kanda to safety and heads back up towards the main group. He jumps into the fray of the gun standoff and ends up causing the murderers to retreat, but they take Uehara as a hostage as they slink away.

Kei turns to Saito and asks him about the building that they are in (he’s the one person who has been here before) – he wants to know the best place to ambush them and try and get back his teacher. The plan is to try at the bar at the bottom of the building, it is the most open. As the 1st group reaches the bar, Uehara manages to get a hold of a gun and tries to escape but ends up enraging her captors who overpower her and enter the bar. As Kei’s team gets there, they bust in the door and find that she’s been stripped of her suit and been cut over most of her body. Muroro drops the knife and Kaziura drops their captive as both sides point weapons at each other. Uehara makes a final move, after saying her goodbyes to Kei, she picks up the knife and slashes Kaziura on the forehead leaving a quick bleeding wound. Muroto then kills her in retaliation, and the duo makes their escape. The

team finally gets outside and meets up with Kanda, and with a blood trail it won’t be too difficult to follow their prey. The team starts arguing about how to proceed, Kei believes that it would be best to kill the pair, but Furata wants to “save” Muroto who he believes is merely a misguided youth. This all becomes moot as Saito pulls his gun on the rest and says that he wants no more of this.

Episode 25: Let’s All Go Back Alive

Saito’s change of heart forces the rest of the team to decide to leave him to his own devices. Furata and Kei leave first saying that they intend to stop them, Kanda wants to stay with the pair, and Nozaki follows but mentions to Saito that he will probably be the next target of the killers seeing as though he is alone. Saito sees the intelligence in this and follows the rest. The pair of murderers have slinked on to an amazing hideout and have stumbled across a huge cache of weapons, they are now laying in wait for an ambush. As the team enters the building, Kaziura starts trading fire with Kei but Furata heads right towards Muroto and tries to convince him to surrender and keep his future. Muroto’s act is quite convincing, and he stuns Furata by using him as a pivot-point for his bazooka that takes out Saito. In the blaze of bullets, Kei manages to seriously wound Kaziura taking his arm, but he manages to slink away.

Furata is shocked at how he was deceived, but he decides that he cannot leave Muroto alive now so he heads off after him to kill him. Kanda decides to join him, which leaves Kei and Nozaki to hunt Kaziura. Kei and Nozaki track their quarry to a conference room complete with a giant sushi dinner, with Kaziura sitting at the head of the table as he bleeds profusely. He pulls a weapon on his attackers aiming for Kei, but Nozaki shields Kei and is killed in a hail of bullets. Kaziura stands up to reveal that he’s holding 6 grenades on a switch and is intending to take Kei with him. Kei makes the first move and drop kicks the man then running away to avoid the blast.

Meanwhile, Furata and Kanda have cornered Muroto but the kindly man is having trouble pulling the trigger against the youth. Muroto takes advantage of the situation and wounds the older man with a shot to the belly. Now bleeding profusely, Furata has fallen to the ground and Muroto has decided to create a sick game – he puts a grenade in the man’s mouth and ties the pin to a string around Kanda’s neck and starts pummeling the girl. If Kanda moves away from the beating, she will blow the head off of Furata. With the beating going on brutally, Furata decides to stop it by pulling the pin intentionally. The grenade goes off, killing Furata (obviously) but also injuring Muroto who has been burned by the incendiary.

Episode 26: Please Live

Kei and a hurt Kanda are going to have to make a final stand against a really pissed off and burned Muroto. I’d hate to ruin the end, so I won’t say anything.

The terrible cliffhanger and resolution between Episodes 24 and 25 aside, I found this disc more palatable on the 2nd watching than my initial impression. Although not the best ending, the series was very entertaining and certainly had some of the best digital animation.
