Gantz Volume 5: Process of Elimation (DVD)

The violence erupts as the second game not only pits the resurrectees against aliens but against each other as well! As the new group of players fight amongst themselves, a newer and deadlier alien menace is thrown against them. Against the sonic screams and ever-increasing numbers of their new opponents, the enhanced power suits and weapons provided by Gantz are no guarantee of survival… but for the unsuited Kurono, the likelihood of survival is almost non-existent! The blood will flow in the fifth shocking installment of GANTZ!

Violence. Check. Nudity. Double check. It’s going to be an initiation by fire for the newbies, especially with this diverse group of personalities. Who’s going to step up amongst this group?

Episode 09: I’ll Kill You Without A Moment’s Hesitation

We’ve got a new batch of players for the 2nd mission, and everyone is milling about the room. Kei makes a horrific discovery – his suit that he kept at home was his only one; he did not get one at the room and is worrying now about the mission. Gantz shows them their target for this mission: the Suzuki Alien – a short guy that looks pretty much like a robot. Kato tries to establish some order in the room and suggests that everyone put on their suits. Tetsu the biker does not take well to being ordered around and wants to understand the hierarchy of the situation; Kato does not call himself the leader and leaves the decision of getting equipped to individuals. Kei-chan heads to the foyer to get into her suit and the 3 bikers sneak off to watch. As soon as Kato discovers that they are missing, he heads to the foyer himself but he’s beaten there by Tetsu. Tetsu noticed that his gang was advancing on Kei-chan and so he steps in and orders them to stop. His gang gives him friction over his order, and his gang is starting to rebel against him. However, the immediate crisis is averted and they leave.

Now fast forwarding a bit, everyone has put on their suits except the three gang members. The middle school student finally speaks up and notices that Kei doesn’t have a suit. Kei considers stealing one of the unused suits, but cannot figure out how he’d do it without getting mauled. Kato tries diplomacy and asks one of the bikers to lend him theirs, but they refuse. The student speaks up again and states that the suit will only work, if it’s intended for the user. He continues to go on a tirade, criticizing every person in the room for their lack of tenacity and ends up pissing off

one of the bikers enough that he pulls out his weapon. He fires and the energy crackles off of the kids’ suit; he becomes furious and retaliates by firing at point blank range and taking his head clean off. He then yells at Gantz, and the mission starts. Kei ends up alone and he sees the target immediately – walking towards him carrying a bag of Kinder Eggs (little chocolate eggs with prizes) that are hatching birds.

Episode 10: Yuzo?

Kei is freaking out that he’s come into contact with the alien while alone, and wants to avoid a fight… but the alien couldn’t care less and completely ignores Kei. He is going to try to ambush it from behind, but one of the birds perches on his arm and draws the alien’s attention towards him. Kei pulls it off his arm and the alien becomes angry. Definitely not wanting to fight, he runs away and the alien chases after him. He catches up to the majority of the team and the alien stops a distance from everyone. As everyone discusses the situation, one of the birds is suddenly killed by what looks like a lightning strike – the alien turns around and screams. With the shrill scream, the students cloak disappears and reveals that he had stepped on the bird. He tries to fire at the alien, but it suddenly starts flying and heads down into the culvert nearby.

He continues to pepper it with gunfire, but he cannot get a bead on the alien. The alien continues to travel quickly, so the delay guns are rendered useless against it. Apparently the kids’ cloak is useless against the alien, as it can see him quite well with it on and with repeated blows, the cloak fails completely and he begins panicking. He yells to everyone else (who have been watching instead of fighting) to help him out… but no one seems particularly interested in helping at all. Tetsu yells down a demand that he apologize for what he said and did and he will consider helping, but the kid refuses to do that. The student then loses his gun after the alien bats it away, and he’s forced to resort to punching it back… except his suit suddenly oozes a blue liquid and he screams for help, claiming that his suit will no longer work. Seeing the boy in serious trouble, Kato can no longer stand by – he gets Kei to explain how to use the suit properly then jumps down to fight.

The pacing of Disc 05 was a tad slow for both episodes – it’s a bit of a sluggish start for this mission. Not necessarily a bad pair, just not as intense as we’d expect. The next disc should be much better.

"Today's the anniversary of a huge fight me and Francine got into last year."

"Yeah, what about?

"Oh, I forgot our anniversary. I'm never going to do that again."
