Gantz Volume 6: Sudden Death (DVD)

The carnage erupts as the surviving players in Gantz’s twisted game find themselves facing two kinds of aliens! As both novice and experienced players are mercilessly slaughtered, the unarmed and unsuited Kurono’s only hope lies in somehow managing to survive until the clock runs out… But how can he manage that when he’s trapped inside a whole nest of aliens? The climactic end of the second game brings the sixth volume of GANTZ to a blood-chilling conclusion!

This disc marks the end of Season 01, as well as the end of 2 episodes a disc. From this point on, we get a higher episode count on each disc. The game’s just started and already one of the most dangerous players is in serious trouble. This does not brood well for everyone else. Let’s go!

Episode 11: He Can’t Shoot

Kato has jumped in to help save the kid, but he’s too late. The alien has closed the distance to the struggling boy and uses its’ sonic attack at close range. The shockwave is tremendously damaging and explodes both of his eyes as well as his eardrums (who knows the extent of the damage to his internal organs). Despite the extensive injuries, the boy still screams out to attack the alien, and Kato draws his gun… but he cannot use it, and both Kei-chan and Kei know it. He decides that he’s going to use the gun to keep the alien at bay, then he picks up the kid and brings him to the high ground; except, the alien has now snuck up behind him (and he’s managed to drop his gun in the confusion). At this point, both Kei and Kei-chan have run down and fire on the alien, but miss. Kato is left with no option but to wrestle with the alien, so he grabs it in a bear hug and uses his suit to help crush the alien.

The rest of the group has decided to leave – the 2 surviving members of the biker gang as well as the grandmother with her grandson are leaving the battle. The group of four heads out and stop as they reach a payphone; the grandmother is going to make a phone call to call her daughter while the gang members press on… until that is, the first leaves the area and his head explodes. The biker quickly starts running back to the rest of the group. Back at the fight, the alien’s head suddenly opens up and a giant bird (much like the ones being hatched from the eggs) is

coming out. It cannot easily leave its’ casing and so Kei aims with his gun and kills it. So everyone now heads to check on the boy. His injuries are quite severe and with the pain, he’s moaning out about how he committed suicide the first time and how he only needed 10 more points until the game was over. These revelations strike the rest hard, and the rest of the team is now more ready to continue to fight. The episode ends with the boy finally succumbing to his injuries.

Episode 12: Kato, You Wait Here

The team now discusses how to proceed. They are now going to use their tracking equipment to look for the remaining aliens in this area and try and protect the weaker members from being hurt; so Kei-chan, Kato, and the male model are going to head out. The remaining biker pulls his gun on Kei and Tetsu and is going to lead them on his own. While he’s not looking, Kei picks up the gun that was dropped by Kato and hides it in his clothing. Kato’s team runs across the grandmother and grandson and is then caught in between 2 of the aliens who approach from either side. Kato tells the pair to run away, while the three will deal with the aliens. Not a few seconds later, they see yet another  group of aliens coming in, these ones are flying. Kei-chan tries to fire on one of the aliens, but she’s knocked away, so Kato tackles one and begins to put it into a bear hug once again. It escapes its’ suit, and tries to flee but Kato runs it down and knocks it out. The exertion causes his suit to fail and he’s now in danger with 4 aliens still surrounding him. Kei-chan fires and kills one of the aliens and heads to point-blank range to fight the remaining three. As the remainder approach Kei-chan, the model joins in and bear-hugs one like Kato did; as before, the alien inside jumps out but the other 2 fly away. As they try and catch their breath, the knocked out alien awakens and tries to get into the open suit, but dies while trying to seal it (hmm… curious).

Back to Kei’s group. The trio are walking along the river looking for the aliens using one of the trackers, while the remaining biker keeps his gun trained on both Kei and Tetsu. Kei finally gets a signal, but it’s a large signal and it’s coming from a nearby house. The biker changes the direction to the house, and as the group nears it, the resolution on the tracker changes and they discover that instead of one large blip, it’s actually a grouping of many small ones. He points his gun and Kei and tells him to check it out. Kei searches the bottom floor, but finds nothing so he heads to the upstairs. As he walks down the hallway he sees the young birds again, and suddenly the doors near him open simultaneously and he’s now surrounded by aliens. The room at the end of the hallway opens to reveal a larger bird alien sitting away from him.

The grandmother and grandson pairing is hiding from the aliens in an open car port, and the grandson starts complaining that he needs to use the bathroom. So he removes his suit and heads to the corner. While relieving himself, the two aliens from Kato’s group head into the carport towards the boy. The grandmother sends the boy away while she intends to hold them off; he runs outside and when he sees flashes of light, he heads back inside to see his grandmother injured like the student. Running to her, she covers him with her body as the aliens press their attack. Kato’s team arrives only to see the flash from outside the carport.

Episode 13: Please Die

Kato’s team is outside the carport, but with his suit not working, Kei-chan tells him to remain behind while she and the model run in to fight. The pair come from either direction and fire on the aliens, killing them both. The team notices that they only have 15 minutes remaining, and head off looking for more enemies.

Kei decides that the large bird must be the “boss”, but he’s now surrounded by six aliens. They continue to talk the same nonsensical phrases as before, but this time he responds to them with their phrases which seems to placate them and they do not attack. One of the young birds jumps onto his shoulder and begins biting his neck, so he forcefully removes it and sets it on the ground. The action seems to upset the aliens, so he figures that he better move now and heads towards the “boss” who still hasn’t faced him yet. While walking, he steps on another of the birds. Now the aliens are really pissed and the boss turns around – it’s a giant bird (with teeth and a beak) that has a re-breather running into its’ mouth. He refuses to be intimidated any more, and begins firing at each target surrounding him. The aliens keep evading his attacks, but the strikes hit the building. From the combined damage, the floor collapses so Kei falls to the lower floor. He heads out the entrance as the entire building falls from the battle.

Kei is joined by Kato’s team as well as the rest of his team. He thinks that they’ve won, but the timer still is ticking down, so something remains. At this point, the biker is picked off the ground by the boss and is beheaded in midair. The boss lands near the group and snarls at Kei, who also refuses to back down. He fires at the alien, but it manages to grab him by his shoulder (the one holding the gun) and flies off into the air. In this aerial battle, Kei cannot fire at the alien so he does the next best thing… he grabs its’ re-breather and pulls it out. The boss drops Kei and as he’s falling, he fires two shots into it and kills it. Kei then hits a roof top but manages to not hit the ground from there. At this point, everyone is transported back to the room and scoring begins.

The dog… nothing. Kei-chan – 10 points. Kato – 5 points. The stalker – 0 points. The model – 10 points (and the unhappy title of “The Fag” from Gantz). Tetsu – 0 points. Kei – 38 points! Everyone is now free to return home, and on the way, Kei-chan asks Kato if he lives alone. He responds that he lives with relatives, and Kei-chan is disappointed (but not as much as Kei is over being continually rebuffed).

This disc of Gantz was a vast improvement over the last one with a much better pacing of action. Now we shift back to “normal” life for a little bit. Looking forward to throwing in the next volume already.
