Great Teach Onizuka Volume 3 (DVD)

Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) begins its shift to more serious storylines.  The character development continues to be the strength of the series with graphic and emotional traumas being visited on the students in Onizuka’s class. This series is quickly becoming more of a serious drama than a comedic series and is definitely not for everyone.

Episode 10: Outside Looking In

The slow-witted (yet genetically fortunate) Nomura is ostracized by Miyabi and the clique of girls for failing in setting up Onizuka with the panties in his locker. This episode is punctuated by some really nasty bullying against Nomura – not for the faint of heart or the emotional. This episode spends a large amount of the time following Nomura and her general feelings of distance from all the other students in the class. Not missing a beat, Onizuka decides to help her self-esteem in a strange way.

Episode 11: To Be Idolized By A Nation

Onizuka’s plan to enter Nomura in an idol search certainly doesn’t seem to be a good idea for a depressed girl with low self-esteem especially when Miyabi is also in the competition. This episode delves into the history between the two girls and why

Nomura is always so deferential towards Miyabi. To make things more interesting, Onizuka cancels class in favor of a field trip to the competition (I’m sure that this is not going to sit well with the Vice-Principal. )

Episode 12: The Formula For Treachery

Fuyutsuki (Onizuka's "love interest" and fellow teacher) has a secret admirer… the kind that completely covers his apartment with pictures of the teacher. The

admirer/stalker is none other than the straight-laced math teacher Teshigawara, and yet another member of the teaching staff who can’t stand Onizuka and his laid-back approach to teaching. The blossoming relationship between Onizuka and Fuyutsuki certainly won’t help matters any in his mind – especially when Onizuka comes over in place of Fuyutsuki to destroy Teshigawara’s carefully laid plans.

Episode 13: Only The Best Will Do

Onizuka’s unintentional destruction of Teshigawara’s apartment and body are not going to win him any popularity contests with the math teacher. Teshigawara begins to lay down a plan to have Onizuka fired using Hidemi’s mother (Hidemi is a student he tutors, but is forced to perform degrading acts upon). Hidemi’s mother is the president of a teacher’s policing group that walks in on Onizuka teaching a class wearing an elephant outfit complete with a codpiece that squirts water. Said water soaks the president and trouble escalates for Onizuka. Things get more interesting when Hidemi decides that she wants to subjugate Onizuka.

Episode 14: Between A Rock And A Hard Place

Onizuka can retain his job only if he gets the highest national score on the Togaku exam (a performance exam given to all middle school students). With the unlikey nature of that happening, everyone wants to help him out. His male students try breaking into the school at night in the attempt at stealing a copy of the exam ahead of time and replacing Onizuka’s exam later with a completed and corrected one – but that plan is destined to be sabotaged by those who hate Onizuka. Fuyutsuki decides that she can help Onizuka study by having him stay over for a week. (Think inedible brain foods and test gorging).

The third volume of GTO is more serious and dramatic than the previous volumes – some people will be amazed at the amount of work done on the series, others will not like the traumatic experiences in the episodes. This series is not for everyone, but those who liked the tone of the first 2 discs will appreciate this set.
