Great Teacher Onizuka Volume 5 (DVD)

The fifth volume of GTO begins to turn away from the complete life and times of Eikichi Onizuka and begins to focus more on his clique of friends and class. You can still count on Onizuka for his usual brand of insanity blended with solid advice, and in this case, it’s not just towards his student but to everyone in his life. An excellent blend of humor and drama make this disc a great way to spend 2 hours.

Episode 20: Love Letters

Kunio receives a love letter only with an initial on it, which leaves everyone wondering who could have written it. Onizuka lends his “special” brand of help… a balance of wanting to see his students succeed as well as not wanting to see anyone get a girlfriend before him… with allies like that, you needs enemies? Things only get more complicated when a jealousy angle and a hidden love become involved.

Episode 21: Revolution Everywhere

Miss Fuyutsuki experiences a boycott of her class by all female students because of the “attention” she’s been receiving from the male students (bordering on sexual harassment). Once the boycott becomes intimidation, Miss Fuyutsuki goes back to the town of Hakuba, the first place where she taught. Onizuka then rounds up a small group of students (Kunio, Nomura, and Kikuchi) on the guise of a field trip to find her.

Episode 22: The Art of Demolition

Hitomi (one of Fuyutsuki’s old students in Hakuba) begins to work through her anger towards Fuyutsuki and begins to understand that even teachers are mortal. Meanwhile, a film crew is setting up to demolish the abandoned old school but Hitomi runs into the school in order to save an old pipe organ. It’s Onizuka to the rescue… we hope.

Episode 23: Superstition

Eikichi Onizuka doesn’t believe in the occult or superstitions, but when his burning of the accumulated chain letters that he’s been receiving ends up setting his pants on fire, his life is becomes one traumatic experience after another…

The first and last episodes are the requisite “funny” episodes that don’t disappoint, especially the latter which had me laughing so hard that I had to pause the disc on a few occasions. Great Teacher Onizuka is now one of the discs that I religiously keep my eye out for at the video store. A must have for otaku looking for something different.
