Kekko Kamen Volume 1 (DVD)

Fighting for Justice! Freedom! And The Naked Truth!

To expose rampant classroom corruption at the Big Toenail of Satan’s Spartan Institute of Higher Education – all while repeatedly rescuing everyone’s favorite victim, the beautiful (and often naked) Mayumi Takahishi, from the Institute’s terrifying torture chamber. And if battling a perverted principal and treacherous teacher weren’t enough, the well-endowed Kekko Kamen must bare it all as she goes up against a Nazi dominatrix Punishment Counselor; a maniacally muscle-bound superstud; the electrically charged tentacles of a gorgeous exchange student from hell; and a super-sleazy, snapshot-taking samurai who’s bent on capturing naughty photos of every girl on campus. Will Mayumi make it out alive? (Or at least with her school uniform?) Will our skin-clad crusader be able to straddle the line between indecent exposure and her desire to win decent treatment for the school’s succulent student bodies?

Wow. Just wow. I’m glad that I didn’t have to go into a store to buy this, there’s no way that anyone wouldn’t look at this box cover and think it wasn’t porn – it would destroy my wholesome image (none of my friends and colleagues can stop laughing at that last statement, especially considering that I believe it to be true). Anyways, to the review! For those unable to pick up the blatantly obvious, this anime is rated TV-MA which means it’s definitely NOT for kids (and probably some adults). This show is stacked with breasts (don’t miss a pun ever), hentai characters, panties, whipping, and extreme overacting. Although comedic in nature (with no one showing any after effects from their beatings or humiliations), the imagery can be a little disturbing at times and would most likely offend some people.

Kekko Kamen is another of the OVAs released of Go Nagai!’s work; some people love the art style and gritty stories some think that it’s dreck. It pretty much is a polarizing body of work, you either like it or love it. The animation is very dated compared to what we’re used to, but then again, it did come out back in 1991 and animation certainly has come a long way in the last 14 years.

Episode 1

The first episode introduces the trauma-center known as the Big Toenail of Satan’s Spartan Institute of Higher Education by having an entire class take a 60 question math exam with a 60 minute time limit. The rub? The student with the lowest score will be punished by the new Punishment Counselor, a dominatrix from Auschwitz Academy complete with swastikas and goose-stepping bodyguards (back in the days when all adult oriented anime revolved around Nazi imagery). Poor Mayumi falls asleep during the difficult exam and the teacher decides to forgo grading the exams and instead sends her to the new counselor. Taking quickly to her new post, the counselor strips her young ward using a whip and the continuing torture draws the heroine Kekko Kamen out to save the girl. As a calling card, Kekko Kamen leaves a signed pair of women’s panties to the trailing bodyguards.

This interference does not sit well with the Principal and Teacher Ben (both of which wanted to see more of Mayumi), and they implement a plan to draw out the masked female with another punishment of Mayumi – this time in the middle of a school wide meeting.

Episode 2

The defeat at the hands of Kekko Kamen did not sit well with the Principal, and so he decides to try and develop a way to neutralize her. His plan – large breasted women cannot resist muscular men, and so he hire Mr. Shuwarutsu as the new PE teacher and Punishment Counselor. Not just Kekko Kamen is smitten with the new teacher, most of the female student body is attracted to the very muscular man. Mayumi faints when Shuwarutsu-sensei waves at her and flexes – and so he takes her to the school infirmary and sets a trap for his nemesis.

Like the Principal predicted, Kekko Kamen couldn’t overcome the glistening muscles of the PE teacher and so Mayumi is still being tortured by the newest Punishment Counselor. How will she be able to counter his looks? A blindfold.

Episode 3

The Principal and Teacher Ben continue to try and come up with a new plan on how to help the students improve their grades, and this time they may have come up with an inspired idea: a transfer student Ms. Tanaka (who is actually a robot designed by the two academics). The new addition to the class quickly becomes a praiseworthy personality with her combination of top grades, beauty, and helpful demeanor. Struggling student Mayumi quickly latches on to the new addition and is being tutored. Despite the outside help, Mayumi’s test scores not only fail to improve, they actually get worse (apparently Mayumi has developed a crush on the newcomer, and she believes that Ms. Tanaka could be Tekko Kamen).

Seeing that they need a new tactic, the Principal and Teacher Ben take Ms. Tanaka down to their laboratory and upgrade her equipment, this time with tentacles that not only are strong, but emit an electrical charge when impacting. When Mayumi’s latest study session with Ms. Tanaka fail to yield positive results, she is once again going to be punished but thankfully Kekko Kamen is quick to rush in to battle the opponent. But how is Kekko Kamen going to defeat this opponent?

Episode 4

For the final episode, the Principal and Teacher Ben pull out all the stops and bring in a samurai this time to act as Punishment Counselor. His special talent? Stripping girls with his faster than the eye slashes and then taking pictures of his targets for posterity.

The samurai slowly works his way through the ranks of the female population, but he hasn’t attacked Mayumi yet… but once he does, he expects that Kekko Kamen will be close behind. When the confrontation goes down, the samurai demonstrates a proficiency not yet seen and is able to defeat Kekko Kamen’s finishing blow… how is our heroine going to defeat this man?

Kekko Kamen certainly wasn’t the worst anime that I’ve ever seen, but it’s not going to be displacing any of the greats either. This anime is best watched without using your brain, and would make a great party disc assuming that the crowd is appropriate.
