Kino's Journey Volume 3 (DVD)
A
traveler sees the road.
Treading
the beaten path. To happen upon cleverly concealed clumps of untramped
tales of untamed hearts.
What does she think she believes? Wistful wishes of floating on the
breeze; A girl’s dream dismissed – Her magic undiminished.
What
writs are fit to read? Set in a library, a censorship conflict, the
reader plays the victim, the author; the antagonist.
What
are families for? The mechanics of loyalty are found deep within –
beyond the oblivion of love, behind the circuitry of faith.
Kino senses what others pass by – what lies between the blades of grass. What lies bisect the bonds long past.
With
the violence having passed, it is now time to meet new people and
explore more of this world.
Episode 08: Land of Wizards This tale centers around a girl who exemplifies the scientists of the 1800’s, intellectuals who must have been very different and distant from the general populace. The girl Nimya lost her parents at a young age and ended up living in the old home of a loner who was a Rhodes scholar in the fields of mechanics and robotics. These skills alienated the man from everyone else, and as Nimya ended up with the compiled knowledge, she decided to try and build a flying machine. |

The mere
process of building such a piece of equipment distances her from her
neighbors and fiancée, but the request that the town move a statue so
that she can create a runway just completely removes her from their
understanding. Enter Kino who ends up listening to the burgeoning
scientist, and helping her attempt her dream after the citizens decide
to dismantle her work.

Episode 09: Land of Books Now for the twilight-zone episode – Kino travels to a country that is known for collecting books from all around the known world, but on her way she saves a man crossing the desert. In exchange for her help, he gives her a book and tells her that she can use the book to trade it in for a different book in the country (you can only leave with a book if you trade one in).
Once Kino arrives in the country, she discovers that the fabled library is much smaller than one would expect, and when she inquires about it, she is told that these books were the ones that were acceptable to read. Further questions reveals that the books that are available to be read must have first been deemed acceptable by a standards commission that is run in a building called “the Castle”.
This Castle not only dictates which books can be read, it also houses people who write unsanctioned material or publish unacceptable books. Because no books that are available interest Kino, she leaves only to be stopped by the assistant librarian who brings her along to an underground meeting of people who not only write books but publish books from a man known only as the “Author.” The book that Kino carries is one of the Author’s books and so she is being dragged into a tale much larger than herself.
Episode 10: A Tale of Mechanical Dolls Kino’s noble motorrad Hermes is starting to show signs of wear and tear from the constant riding, and so Kino is looking for a nearby country which is renown for its’ technology. While riding, Kino comes across an elderly lady in the road who offers to put her up for the night because as she claims, there’s no country nearby.
The lady explains that she is a mechanical doll and acts as a maid for the family that she stays with, but she expresses that there should be no problem in putting Kino up for the night. Kino and Hermes are skeptical about the lady’s claims of being a doll, but during a search of the house, the basement turns up a laboratory filled with mechanical parts and robotic limbs and torsos.
That evening’s dinner was a little strange, the hosts seemed
unable to answer all of Kino’s questions about the area nor do they
eat any of the food that the maid has prepared. This story raises a lot
of questions: who are the family, what is the maid exactly and more
importantly, where is the country that Kino was looking for?
Disc 3 of Kino’s Journey provided a trio of really entertaining episodes, or more exactly strange morality tales packaged in a downright cool wrapper. So far, this series has been so exceptional, I’m almost hesitant to watch the last disc which will finish this great series.
