Perfect Blue

Plot twists are such wonderful things when they’re done well. Nothing beats that feeling of elation when you see things present themselves and your left dumbfounded, not quite sure if you should believe what’s happening on the screen, then just clapping, exclaiming "Bravo!" as everything comes together in the end. This is exactly the case with Perfect Blue, a suspense-thriller by director Satoshi Kon, where the way the story progresses the viewer is just as left in the dark about what’s happening as the main character, and just as shocked when everything starts to come together.

The film is about a young woman named Mima Kirigoe, who was part of a pop trio called CHAM!. While she has gained a good deal of success and fame as a member of this group she decides to leave in order to pursue an acting career. This turns out to be a very abrupt change as she leaves her bubble gum image behind, and takes on a more mature persona in the public eye. She starts off with a bit part in a TV drama called Double Blind, which grows into leading role, as her character becomes more popular. Unfortunately some of the things she must do to achieve this stardom shatter her former persona as a singer as she is in some risqué scenes and has some equally mature photos taken of her. As she drifts further and further away from her former, innocent look more and more of the people surrounding

her get killed. All the while Mima is getting increasingly worried about a web site that covers every intimate detail of what she’s been doing on any given day.

This is a very tense thriller as it’s easy to be sucked into Mima’s worried state. Also, the way that Mima begins to have doubts about shedding her innocent image is handled extremely well. However, it’s the way that the movie only lets the viewer know and see

what Mima know and sees that really sets the mood , as it makes a lot of the events a lot more disturbing when they unfold.  Visually the film is very nice. The locales are bustling, there is a lot of detail in the characters and there is some interesting character design. Adding a nice touch is the slight yellow tinge to the picture that helps to create a slightly unsettling feeling while watching the film.

Perfect Blue is an excellent film. The way it conveys Mima’s deteriorating psychological fortitude as she becomes more and more unnerved by events, and the way it presents its plot twists is great. A top notch anime.
