Please Teacher Volume 4:

Hello Again

Kei and Mizuho have become emotionally torn from their time apart, and now Kei cannot keep up the charade for the sake of Ichigo. The internal stress overcomes Kei and he falls into another standstill, will Mizuho’s love for him help him recover? Disc 4 includes the last two episodes of the TV series as well as the hilarious OVA episode that brings back my two favorite characters.

Episode 11: Teacher

Kei remains in the midst of the standstill that felled him in the last episode; and Kei seems centered on the images of what caused his first standstill – a suicide that he was unable to prevent. In the real world, Kei’s friends are worried that he has fallen into another standstill and want to visit him but Minoru will not allow them to visit, instead promising to pass along their good intentions. In the meantime, Mizuho maintains a constant vigil over the prone Kei, spending every waking moment looking for a scientific or emotional solution to helping Kei come out of his standstill.

Seeking a more aggressive plan, Mizuho enters Kei’s mind using her ship’s technology. Kei remains fixated on the moment in his life where his first standstill occurred, and keeps saying about how he doesn’t want to hurt other people or be hurt himself. After talking with Mizuho, he realizes that a relationship would not be all happy times but be filled with pain or anger at times. Just as Kei remembers Mizuho, she is removed from his lucid dream and he returns to 

confront his memories. Realizing that he no longer wants to withdraw from pain, he decides to continue forward and then he apologizes to the memory of his sister – the one who committed suicide in front of him.

Episode 12: Teacher Once Again

This episode starts with Mizuho being grilled during a review of her actions by a supervisory committee. For revealing her mission to Kei as well as abusing her ship’s

technology to enter Kei’s mind, Mizuho was stripped of her rank as an observer as well as returned to her home planet. To protect future missions, all people that were exposed to Mizuho had their memories of her erased, including Kei. Back on Earth, the group are progressing much like they were before but he has been feeling a sense of loss in his life and can’t figure out what it is. Meanwhile, an alone Kei stares up at the sky wondering what missing part of his life is causing him pain … then Mizuho appears nearby after sneaking back to Earth but is unable to just go to Kei because he can’t remember their time together.

In a recreation of the first episode, Mizuho’s (re-)introduction to the class occurs in much the same way that it did before except one year has passed for everyone else (that’s a bigger change for some people rather than others). At her apartment (the same one next door to Minoru and Konoha) she has an exact recreation of her formal meeting with Kei, by him helping her move in boxes into the empty apartment complete with them tripping into each other and falling into the ground. At this point, the emotions are too much for Mizuho and she begins crying… but Kei reveals that he remembers their time together and is happy to see her again. With their reunion complete, they agree to get married once again.

Episode 13: Secret Couple

To the third best episode of the series (but definitely the funniest)! On a relaxed Sunday afternoon, Kei thinks that Mizuho is still in bed so he slips back into bed for some lovin’ only to discover that the woman in bed isn’t Mizuho but Hatsuho (her nearly identical mother) who is dressed in lingerie and now has her hands all over Kei just as Mizuho returns home. The awkward situation was then replaced by an even more awkward tea break where Hatsuho interrogates Mizuho for all the details of their love life (including a supposedly “cute” sound that Kei makes when excited). Kei sneaks out on the talk only to run into Maho who decides to blackmail Kei into taking her on her first date (by showing him film footage of last night between him and Mizuho).

Despite Kei’s attempts to keep the date on the down-low, he is unsuccessful as he is immediately discovered by Matagu – who inevitably becomes more despondent at discovering that yet someone else started a relationship while he remains alone. After leaving Maho behind to straighten things out with Matagu, Hatsuho shows up. She immediately transports Matagu away, and takes Kei with her to a love hotel. Not missing a chance to get involved – the scene of Kei being dragged into a love hotel by Hatsuho was witnessed by Ichigo and Koishi and to make things even more open, Kei and Hatsuho run into Kaede and Hyosuke who were leaving the hotel.

A now panicked Mizuho is searching high and low for Kei (she can’t use Marie to find him because Hatsuho is using Miruru to jam the signal) and runs into Ichigo and Koishi who witnessed Kei going into the love hotel. Now switching back to the love hotel, Kei is now tied onto the bed while Hatsuho approaches wielding some item so perverted that it was blacked out like in Japanese porn (with accompanying whirring noise). Mizuho decides that it’s now time for drastic action, and orders Marie to transport her to where Kei is. Kei is still tied up on the bed, but Hatsuho is no where to be seen… a relieved Kei and Mizuho then spend the evening in the love hotel.

I must admit that I was surprised to see that Please Teacher was imported to North America, and I am very happy that it was (especially with the OVA episode). This is one of the best series to come across this year.
