Scryed Volume 5: Evacuation (DVD)

In an attempt to capture Mimori, Kigetsuki and the Tokonatsu sisters attack the Inner Village but they are thwarted by Kazuma who arrives in the nick of time. Kazuma and Kanami’s reunion is short-lived as she is kidnapped by Biff. While Cougar tries to calm down Kazuma and Ryuho to plan their next course of action, Mujo attacks them with the surveillance/attack sattelite, HOLY Eye. To set the stage for the final showdown, Mujo orders the evacuation of the Lost Ground and creates an Alter fortress in the heart of the city with powers enhanced by Kanami’s Alter. When Ryuho goes to rescue Kanami, he will face his former mentor, Martin Zigmarl and learn the truth about the mysterious Alter responsible for his mother’s death.

The line is starting to be drawn and people are now choosing sides in the coming conflict. With Ryuho choosing to fight against HOLY, and Kazuma still against that organization does that mean the two powerhouses will actually fight as a team?

Episode 19: The Three Tokonatsu Sisters

Back at the village, Scheris is forced into action – Kigetsuki and his alter the Tokonatsu sisters are being supported by a DARS unit as well as the native Alter and are looking for Ryuho. Although the fight starts, Scheris’ alter will not allow her to turn the battle around herself and she is only left with the option to stall for reinforcements. The villagers are rounded up under Kigetsuki’s power and knocked unconscious. Although Ryuho’s arrival allows for sufficient firepower – he will not act as the villagers are being held as hostages; and so not only are they going to take Mimori back to command and pound on Ryuho until he submits. However, more reinforcements arrive: Cougar and Kazuma who knock out the native Alter and take away the possibility of killing the hostages. Now free to use his powers, Ryuho and company clean house but not before Kigetsuki and the native Alter escape back to HOLY headquarters. What should be a welcome homecoming for Kazuma is interrupted by the angry Ryuho for endangering the hostages – apparently the 2 hot-heads aren’t going to reason any time soon. Examining the aftermath, the group realizes that the DARS members are actually former native Alters that were captured and brought to the mainland. Mimori explains that they were brainwashed and their Alter powers have been adjusted to make them more useful as a strike force. Back at HOLY headquarters, Mujo kills and absorbs Kigetsuki and makes plans for his new target: Kanami.

Episode 20: Kanami Yuta

A sort of recap and define everyone’s standing episode. Kanami tells Kazuma all about the time since the Second Earthquake, what she was doing, her time at the camp, how she was saved by Ryuho. They are both very happy to see and be with each other, but don’t go out and say it. We also get a nice little flashback to the first meeting of the two. The rest of the group is discussing the program whereby the native Alter users are taken back to the mainland and transformed. Cougar admits

that he was used in that program and that unlocked many new powers, but his powers wear on his body (to which he suggests that both Ryuho and Kazuma must have the same problem to a greater degree). After more discussion, Ryuho leaves and ends up talking with Kazuma – and we are reminded of why he’s joined HOLY, to find the native Alter user who killed his mother. The two end up blistering at each other once again, but another attack by the native Alter user Biff captures Kanami and the pair are unable to save her.

Episode 21: HOLY Eye

The latest attack on the village has left many hurt and much of the village destroyed. Scheris, Mimori, and Tachibana are doing the best they can to help them. Both Kazuma and Ryuho are fuming at the mouth to get her back, but Cougar beats some sense into the two and tries to get them to think about the situation. In the City, Mujo has declared that there will be another earthquake and has called for a general evacuation of the city. He plans to let all of the normal civilians leave and keep all of the Alter users in the Lost Ground. In HOLY headquarters, Zigmarl has noticed that his authority is slowly being rescinded and is making a plan: he has Urizane, but Elian has succumbed and is now unconscious (from having his perception blocked for such a long time). The group at the village is getting ready but they still don’t know where to go and containing Kazuma is taking all of Cougar’s strength right now. But they catch a break – Mujo uses HOLY EYE to communicate with everyone and they now know where he is: The Ryu family shrine (unfortunately, Mujo used his power on Ryuho’s father and made him commit suicide). Mujo then uses the satellite to attack the group, but Ryuho and Kazuma unleash their powers at full strength which destroys the weapon. With the power release, Mujo is able to see the opened gate that swallowed the pair earlier. In this space, he sees the Alter body that killed Ryuho’s mother and merges with it. With this new power, Mujo absorbs most of the city and reforms all the matter into a giant fortress that surrounds HOLY headquarters. Ryuho and Kazuma’s power release has allowed them to fly, and they head for the city as beams of light.

Episode 22: Martin Zigmarl

The pair are heading through the ruined city towards the fortress, while Cougar drives the ladies to the city at speeds that only he can handle. The men split up once they come across two separate entrances, and Ryuho comes across Commander Zigmarl who attacks him with his Alter ability. With the Commander dominating the fight and him goading Ryuho to fight without restraint, he finally tells him that his mother’s death was because the embodiment of the other world was drawn to his powers (which killed his mother in the process). The anger at how he was manipulated and used allows Ryuho to create a different Alter form – he no longer needs Zetsui, his Alter forms around his body as armor. With a decisive strike, he runs through Zigmarl. Now seriously wounded, Zigmarl reveals that Elian is actually his son and that he was the 1st Alter taken to the mainland. He wants Urizane to protect Elian and believes that Ryuho has the power to stand up to the mainland. For Kazuma, he draws Biff who attacks in a much larger Alter form, and every time he destroys the Alter it reforms a moment later. The constant battle finally allows for Biff’s conditioning to break, as well as the conditioning on all of the DARS units who regain consciousness and fall from the fortress. The girls finally arrive at the fortress with Cougar, and Mimori is going to examine the fortress which she identifies as an Alter, while Scheris is going to search for Ryuho.

This volume of Scryed has been trucking along at quite a clip, and we’re definitely heading for the climactic battle in the next disc. So far, so good.
