Steam Detectives Case 5 (DVD)
Narutaki’s
cases have always had him putting his neck on the line – but never
this close. Between the Crimson Scorpion and a masked villain bent on
ridding the world of detectives, each step the boy detective takes could
be his last.
On
top of that, Le Bled has resurfaced and extended an invitation,
promising to make it worth the detective’s while. Narutaki’s gut
tells him it’s a trap, but how can he resist a chance to finally
apprehend his arch-nemesis?
Crime never sleeps, but neither do our heroes! Occupational hazard or no, the Steam Detectives are on the job!
After the last disc, we’re starting to see some depth out of the series… albeit still episodic, but now we’re actually getting some tie ins to earlier action. This disc starts to showcase a little more desperation out of the criminals – as their actions are more aggressive, their plots more grandiose, and plans more diabolical.

Episode 19: Pale Crimson Memories A sentimental episode – the Crimson Scorpion sends out one of her declarations, and she claims that she’s going to steal the greatest treasure from a private collector. Narutaki and Ling-Ling head over to help protect the valuables, but when the Crimson Scorpion instead steals a seemingly worthless bronze sword that was being held in storage before disposal… everyone is left a little stunned. Things become even stranger with the intensity that the Crimson Scorpion is working at, and why is she speeding along towards a soon to be abandoned city? |

Episode 20: Goodbye Young Detective A
series of kidnapping have been taking place over the last few months,
except the targets have been different: detectives have been abducted.
With this rash of missing sleuths, Ling-Ling worries about Narutaki and
her fears are justified when he is attacked at night by a villain
calling himself “Justice”. This villain claims to want to stop
detectives from harming people, but is very specific in not wanting to
harm police officers. After surviving the initial attack, a new police
detective is assigned to escort Narutaki and it’s a lovely blonde
woman named Anna. Ling-Ling is more than a little jealous, but that’s
not going to help to solve this case.
Episode 21: Le Bled’s Invitation Narutaki continues to battle his arch-nemesis Le Bled, and during the course of the fight Le Bled collapses. Unable to take advantage of the weakness, Le Bled and Lang-Lang manage to escape but not before some of his medication is dropped. Analysis of this medication leads Narutaki to a frightening conclusion: Le Bled is not only really sick, he’s terminally ill. While at the hospital, Le Bled meets up with another patient who is also terminal: stage producer Mr. Grammy. The two individuals decide to work together to develop one last show… one about the rivalry between Narutaki and Le Bled. The episode ends with Le Bled giving Narutaki an invitation to see the play one night before opening night.
Episode 22: Rivals, Eternally As
Narutaki enters the playhouse, he is greeted by Le Bled who has a
strange offer: if Narutaki can remain seated throughout the entire play
he will surrender, but if he cannot, he will die. Seems like a fair
trade until the show starts and Le Bled keeps setting off deathtraps and
firing projectiles at our detective who must remain seated during all
this carnage. Will Narutaki be able to keep his cool?
Disc
5 of Steam Detectives has been
higher stakes than previous discs, much like every previous disc has
been. Will the tension dominate the last disc? Only time will tell.
