Trigun: Spicy Stewed Donuts

(Soundtrack Review)

Released by: TOKYOPOP.com

This has got to be one of the most "all over the place" sounding soundtracks that I have ever heard. There are so many different styles on this CD that it almost defies belief. There's heavy and light guitar driven tracks, acoustic guitar, stuff with a western theme, abrasive electronic tunes and more ambient ones too. Of course this is just a reflection of the more eclectic musical flavor of Trigun, but I was expecting the tracks to have bore more similarities to one another, not this dynamo of diversity.

The disc starts off with the theme from the show, but after that it dives straight into the two songs on the soundtrack most difficult to digest. Both are electronic, but their sound is just so abrasive and the time signature is free-flowing so you can't even clue in on a beat so the listener is just left there scratching their head, wondering what's going on. After this things pick up quickly and the music is back on track to being pretty good. Usually such a wide ranging mix of

musical genres would be a big turn off to me, but here it's not too bad. The layout of the tracks is set in a manner that creates a more gradual transition between the different styles. There aren't very many sudden, jarring changes in genres. The light, mellow stuff are the strong points of this soundtrack, not to mention what the disc primarily consists of, but the faster, heavier stuff is largely acceptable too.

Spicy Stewed Donuts is one of those CDs that lends itself well to firing up when working on the computer. It's pleasant to listen to and also aurally fills the
background quite well when doing a paper and whatnot. Fans of the series will dig this CD, assuming they haven't already gotten it, but those into anime, and not
necessarily into Trigun may like this CD too.
