Witch Hunter Robin Volume 3: Inquisition (DVD)

Ooooh. More Witch Hunter Robin goodness. So far, the series has been mostly episodic but now that the show is approaching the half way point the bigger picture starts coming into focus.

Episode 11: The Soul Cages

The STNJ is called in when the Factory picks up a couple of bodies, the deaths being obviously witch-related. Initial ground work proves pointless, as the locals are unwilling to help police but Robin meets an elderly woman who appears to know much about witches, runes, and human nature. After some investigative work, the team notices that the witch causes severe electrical drain on the surrounding area when he uses his powers; this breakthrough allows the team to pinpoint the target and Sakaki with Robin in tow approach the man.

Even with Robin attacking, Sakaki is unable to hit the target because the man is able to deflect the orbo bullets with his powers. The man appears to be unpolished, but his powers are at least equal to Robin’s, however, the encounter is brought to an early end when the elderly woman creates a rune which disables the witch’s powers (unbeknownst to Robin and Sakaki).

Episode 12: Precious Illusions

Robin returns to the slums of the last mission to confront the old woman.

It turns out that the woman is a witch, one that has lived long enough to have been one of the witches in Salem during the trials.  She wastes little time shattering Robin's perception of herself by revealing Robin is actually a witch.  Obviously, this has a jarring effect on Robin and the old witch soon meets a fiery end. After the witch’s death, Robin finds a piece of the staff the witch carried, which she believes holds information attained by the witch through her long life.

Episode 13: The Eyes of Truth

The STNJ team is sent out to greet and aid an Inquisitor for the Catholic Church who is looking to investigate a witch who could potentially be used as a hunter.

The Inquisitor is a master of both psychology and applied lore; who is able to manipulate people masterfully using either of the two techniques to attain his goals (or that of his group). Using technology in tandem with meted words, the Inquisitor is able to bare the soul of his prey and get him to admit his crimes and prove that he does harbor evil thoughts and motives. As such, the man was unsuitable for use as a hunter and was released. The Inquisitor describes the ideal hunter as a person with little or no darkness in their soul and is not willing to use their craft as their primary tool.

With knowledge of a dangerous active witch, the STNJ team is now forced to investigate the man. They're forced to try to subdue him as he is attacked by thugs and begins crushing them with his telekinetic powers. Although Amon is unable to attack the man with orbo, Robin subdues the opponent using her powers and is so upset at how he killed those people she kills him in her flames. After the incident, the Inquisitor announces that he is leaving and says goodbye to Robin, as he believes that it will be the last time that he will see her. After asking why, the Inquisitor states that Robin has become too willing to use her powers, especially to kill. Back at the base, the chief of STNJ reveals to Amon Robin’s true nature (but not to any of us, of course).

Episode 14: Loaded Guns

Amon and Robin are sent out catch a witch hiding in a warehouse, and when the two split up to hunt their quarry, Robin stops to examine a series of power rings in the area. When Amon gives an order for Robin to set up to catch the witch, she is attacked by sniper fire from an unknown attacker. Upset at their cover being blown, Amon dresses Robin down and tells her to leave for the day and is unwilling to believe her story about the sniper. Robin recovers a shell casing from the sniper and asks Michael to research the shell… without telling Amon. While driving somewhere, Amon drops a handful of the same shell casings out of his window… hmm…

The investigation from Michael turns up as being an anti-witch bullet that was banned five years previously, and the rest of the team is understandably upset at the implications. Deciding to shadow Amon and Robin, the team tries to figure out why Amon has been acting evasive and is keeping information from the rest of the team. Now back at home, Robin sees that Touka has been tied up in their living room in front of a giant power circle that neutralizes Robin’s powers. At this moment, a pair of attackers open fire on the apartment but Robin is unable to defend herself and her roommate.

Thankfully, the rest of the STNJ team arrive to return fire which scares away the attackers and when Robin rushes out of the apartment, she runs into Amon in the hallway.

Now staying at the office, Robin tries to sleep while the rest of the team tries to piece together the strange connection between Amon and these attacks on Robin. At Robin’s apartment, the chief violently attacks Amon for some unexplained incompetence at getting Touka hurt.

I must say, feeeewwww! That was one exciting disc and now I’m so caught up in the series, I can’t wait for the next episodes. (late April… DAMN IT!!)
