Yu-Gi-Oh! Volume 1: The Heart of the Cards
Yu-Gi-Oh! is the popular new export from Japan that incorporates anime and a card game. The anime is popular in both its’ homeland as well as North America, where newcomers are flocking to both the game as well as the well animated show. Unfortunately, this release doesn’t include the original Japanese dialogue but that isn’t too disappointing as the English dubbing of the show is excellent.
The main premise of the show is that YuGi (the main character) possesses the "Millennium Puzzle" an object that endows him with magical abilities as well as fortune.
Episode 01: The Heart of the Cards This episode begins the series by introducing the main characters; Yugi Moto, his Grandfather, Kaiba (the son of a corporation and an expert dueling monster gamer) and Yugi’s friends: Joey, Tea, and Tristan. Beginning with Yugi introducing his friends to his Grandfather; he shows them his Grandfather’s prize, a rare Blue Eyes White Dragon card (of which only 4 exist). Kaiba discovers that Yugi’s grandfather possesses the card and battles the man to possess it. After losing the duel, Grandfather suffers a heart attack and Yugi picks up his Grandfather’s deck of cards and now battles Kaiba.
Episode 02: The Gauntlet is Thrown This episode starts by having Joey learn more about Duel Monsters under Grandfather’s wing (which is a great excuse to teach the watchers more about the game). After watching the Regional Championships, Yugi opens a package from the |

games’ creator Maximillion Pegasus. Pegasus draws Yugi into another dimension, and battles Yugi. Upon defeating him, he takes the soul of Grandfather and challenges Yugi to another battle in the Duelist Kingdom.
Episode 03: Journey to the Duelist Kingdom The third episode works into the buildup to the tournament at the Duelist Kingdom, with Yugi giving Joey one of his gold stars in order to have him enter the tournament. |

Joey wants to win the tournament prize money in order to pay for an eye surgery to save his sister’s eye-sight. The chances of victory for Yugi become slimmer once the sinister Weevil throws some of Yugi’s best cards overboard. Yu-Gi-Oh! is memorable for its blending of the kind of inter-battle banter and unrealistic hairstyles (gotta love that 2 color cow-lick/gravity defying hair-do).
