E3 2002: Auto Modellista and More Random Snapshotsby Doug Flowe and Tolkeimingway
Game:
Auto Modellista (E3 impression) Developer:
Capcom
Why is Auto Modellista the first of the E3 crop to grace the AE domain? Well because it is the first title to appear on my computer screen after tinkering for a half hour on the inscrutable Capcom press CD. No, but really, it is the game of show, as far as racing games go that is. The experience that is created when this game is played gives new meaning to the word visceral (in fact I totally redefine nearly every word I use). Every line, curve, effect and sound screams visceral, and it sounds like it feels. Undulating clouds of dust kick up with cartoony glory around every turn, speed lines whip by your car while in a tunnel, where shadow and filtered light embrace in cell shaded passion. A passion that is in turn shared between gamer and Logitech steering wheel (whoever doesn’t have one, leave…now.) Control is two steps away from GT3, towards Daytona USA, at a more technical happy medium. Capcom has chosen correctly in my eyes regarding the control, for a true arcadey |

scheme would have bored the masses whereas a too technical scheme would have clashed with the visuals. Unfortunately the floor demo is limited to two courses, one being a drab practice track. The other however is a quick yet invigorating romp through weathery Tokyo. Lacking were any menu features alluding towards online play and the floor reps were just as blank about it. Though it was playable over a LAN connection, this may be exclusive to Japan as well. |

Game of Show: Racing Show
Stopper: (out of five) ***1/2
One of the many perks of working for the Armchair Empire is partying it up with Hollywood celebrities. In this case, Robin Williams (and Tolkiemingway on the right). I pity the poor fool that ever doubts Mr. T will vanish from the world stage. (The guy on the right... no idea who he is but chances are he'll never be in the A-Team reunion.)
