E3 2003: A Few Quickies and Random Snapshots

by Omni

If you've never been to E3 this might be the next best thing.  E3 is all about snippets -- long and short, you get nothing but snippets of information, play time, and random images pressed into your psyche. We'll have a few more of these articles, pressing random images and snippets of games that appeared on the show floor.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (PS2)
I admit that I have a soft spot for the Turtles and it’s good to see them back in action after an lengthy hiatus. The look is semi-cel shaded and seems to mimic the animation of the new cartoon. The action is four-player much like Turtles in Time but completely 3D. I didn’t get more than a few minutes of playtime so I’m really looking forward to digging into it when it’s done.

Ultimate MUSCLE: The Kinnikuman Legacy (GC and GBA)
The recent Def Jam Vendetta has brought me back into the wrestling genre and if I get to play more wrestlers like Ultimate MUSCLE I’ll be a fan of the genre. If you didn’t grow up in the late ‘80s you may have missed the whole M.U.S.C.L.E. craze – a massive assortment of strangely sculpted, pinkish little men that were traded like baseball cards. This game is one of my personal fantasies come true (circa. 1988). The massive attacks (which play out Anime style) are terrifically executed and the game will probably support four-players simultaneously. Looks aside, it played decently too (and it should since it's out in June).

Savage (PC)
A genre blending game that really makes sense. This game mixes team-based shooters like Tribes 2 and Counter-Strike with the real-time strategy found in WarCraft III and the Command & Conquer series and it works surprisingly well. One player (on each side) is designated a Commander with an isometric overhead view of the action. The Commander is responsible for researching weapon

upgrades, resource management, building placement and, most importantly, issuing orders. Everyone else has free reign to do what they want, although without following orders it’s unlikely the Commander will promote you, making you stronger on the battlefield. At the minimum, the Commander won’t have to deal with babysitting units, as they’ll all be human players. Before Savage ships late this summer, another species will be added to the mix just to make things even more interesting.

eye toy

Sony's Eye Toy may not have been the weirdest peripheral shown, but it certainly was the most entertaining to watch people try.

gamespot

It's anyone's guess why the GameSpot staff was working in biospheres.

halo 2

Beneath the banner was a snaking line of gamers waiting to see

Halo 2 in action.  Pictures were not allowed to be taken in the theater.

hulk

Maybe the most sought after collectible from the show at Vivendi's booth.

atari

An E3 article just wouldn't be complete without a picture of the main entrance.

booth babes

Weirdly dressed and buxom women?  At E3?  No way!  Here's the photographic proof from Microsoft's Xbox booth.  (The game they're promoting is Sudkei.)
