A quintessential side-scrolling shooter that fires on all cylinders.  It’s bright, colorful, full of violence and head-biting action as you navigate some creative levels.  It’s also two-player! And because of Alien Hominid’s save system you’re not forced to play the beginning every time you boot it up.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (GC)

 

With thirty minutes to spare, you could almost finish Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.  That’s not a bad thing either – it’s one of those rare games that actually gets better the more you play it.  Simple controls allow for pick-up and play action, and the presentation – both audio and visual – are great.  The only caveat is that you should play with the  bongo drums, otherwise the fun is only about a third of its potential.

Still one of the best platformer games around, this title is good for long stretches or short bursts of gaming.  Nintendo plugged in a bunch of extra stuff over the N64 original, including the chance to play as Mario, Luigi, Wario and Yoshi, and a huge assortment of mini-games.

Super Smash Brothers Melee / Soul Calibur II (GC)

 

Generally any fighting game can be played in short bursts, but the commonality between these two titles is that you can fight as Link, of Legend of Zelda fame.  While the action of the two games is quite different, the graphics are slick, the controls fairly easy to master, and the fighting systems relatively deep.  Either one is a good bet for some quick play.
