They Hunger 2: Rest in Pieces

They Hunger 2: Rest in Pieces begins right where the first episode left off. The end of They Hunger has the protagonist ambushed by a group of zombies after fighting through waves of hellspawn. The opening of Rest in Pieces has the protagonist locked in a cell awaiting his certain demise. The timely arrival of a cop equipped with a jeep-mounted rocket launcher saves his brain from being the latest Slurpee flavour for zombies. From there, the quest for his survival and eventual escape begins. Along the way he’ll discover the origin of the zombies and what their plans are. The graphics are good. There are lots of new enemies to mow down, including wolves. Some of the character models have been edited, evidenced by the cop with a crowbar protruding from his forehead. There are a few new weapons, too, my favorite being the shovel even though it obscures a lot of the screen. There is also a sniper mode, which is very good. The environments are really creepy, especially the Sanitarium, complete with guard towers. The levels are huge and if you’re not paying attention you will get lost. To accompany the look, Manke has included some very spooky sound effects. The sound design is much improved from the original. The tension created by the graphics and sound are very effective toward the end of the mod, when you must escape from a burning building. Take too long and you’ll be turned into gumbo!

The level of difficulty is fairly high. (Autosave, autosave!) You’ll spend most of the mod with about 30 health if you’re being careful. Jumping puzzles abound but aren’t as difficult as in the first episode. With the difficulty, new skins and models, different weapons, a story and solid sound design this mod is a winner.
