Handhelds Driving Market, says Square-Enix head

In an article with the Financial Times, Square-Enix chief, Yoichi Wada, commented on the state of the industry, and how he feels that the handheld market is driving it at the moment.

“There is a new breed of gamers in the market – we have to make games for all kinds of people,” said Mr Wada, in an interview with the FT. “In the old days, we could just focus on the PlayStation or the GameBoy, but the environment has changed completely.”

“We chose the Nintendo DS because the widest array of people use it, including people who previously did not play games before,” said Mr Wada.

This would certainly explain why Square-Enix has been so supportive of the DS up to this point with a number of Final Fantasy games already released for it, and the next chapter in the Dragon Quest series slated for the system.
