The Armchair Empire has learned that the upcoming MMO Champions Online from Cryptic Studios has gone gold and will be available at retail September 1, 2009. Also of note, the open beta begins today, with the usual slow download speeds and patcher crashes (among other problems) — according the official forums — that typically plague new MMOs in the open beta stage.

Whether this affects the planned release date is anyone’s guess, but we all know how important and solid launch for an MMO is. If the initial experience is horrible, it’s not likely that players will stick around to see if it gets better.
