Star Saga
For
all the talk going on about the PSP and Nintendo DS, one would think the
GBA was dead and buried.This
simply isn’t the case, and Namco / WayForward is out to prove it with their latest
offering on the handheld, Sigma Star Saga.Combining role-playing with a battle system based in the world of
shoot ‘em ups, the game plans to bring an interesting hybrid between
the two genres.
Staying
in step with typical space shooter narrative fair, Sigma Star Saga has
the Earth threatened by an alien race known as the Krill.Things are looking pretty bad, as the human race is on the
losing end of this conflict.However,
intelligence reports have discovered that
the
Krill have taken a particular interest in a certain six planets. Now players must take on the role of a double agent, and
infiltrate the Krill in order to discover why they are so interested in
these planets, and hopefully find a way to stop the onslaught.
The
way in which Sigma Star Saga will combine RPG and shoot ‘em up
elements is by having players explore the game world in a role-playing
setting, where they can collect weapons and ship upgrades, as well as
items called Gun Data, which can be used in battle.Combat is where the shooter aspects of the game

will
come into play, as Sigma Star Saga’s battle engine takes on the form
of a space shooter, instead of your standard menu-driven brouhahas found
in most RPGs.
There
have been a few attempts in the past to combine the genres of
role-playing and schmups, but usually these games fall off the radar
somewhere during development, or are released to very little fanfare. With a large company like Namco behind Sigma Star Saga,
hopefully the finished product will be good enough to make some waves
for this type of hybrid game experience.
