Bet on Soldier

So many games out there try to bring a deep, thought-provoking tale to the table, but what started out as a good idea often times mutates into self-important, pretensions pap by the time the final product hits retail.  Kylotonn is trying something a little different with their upcoming FPS for the PC, doing away with massive wars fought over ideology, territory, or a desire for empire.  In Bet on Soldier, things are a lot more cynical as a massive war has been waging for over eighty years as a form of sport, where people can bet on how well a particular mercenary will perform.

Despite all of this money changing hands, and the huge potential for profit among those that compete in this bloody tournament, Nolan Daneworth has entered it not for fame and fortune, but to avenge his family’s death and unlock the mysteries of his past.  Those with a hankering for a single-player game will follow Nolan on his jolly little voyage of self-discovery and vengence.

However, for those that aren’t big fans of single-player modes in FPS titles, Kylotonn has a lot in mind for Bet on Soldier’s multiplayer mode.  The overall feel of this mode will resemble a cross between Counter Strike and Unreal Tournament, taking the profession-oriented team

play of the former, and fusing it with fast-paced, almost arcade-like feel of the latter.  Players will have six different classes of soldier to choose from, including the Trooper, Sniper, Soldier, Destroyer, Engineer, and Grendadier.  From there, it’s off to fight in exotic locales that range from Europe, to Alaska, to Cuba, to Nevada.

As the name of the game suggests, a big part of playing this title will be betting.  Everything in Bet on Soldier costs money, from weapons, to armor, and even ammunition.  Players earn their money by placing bets on various enemies

fighting in different competitions.  One can look at the various enemies’ current ranking, strengths and weaknesses, as well as their profile in order to figure out how much, or even if they want to bet on that person’s success.

These days, a lot of first person shooters out seem to go in saying, “Here’s some guns, now blow some stuff up, and maybe try to kill that big, bad, evil thingie / guy / army out for world domination / dangerous social reform / other half-baked excuse for a plot” without going too much further.  It’s a highly visceral experience, which is all well and good, but sometimes it’s nice to see a developer include some features that take the genre in a slightly different direction.  Hopefully this betting system in Bet on Soldier will prove an entertaining addition, and not a contrived piece of niche when the game comes out in September.
