Contract J.A.C.K.
I continually live under the illusion that I have my finger on the pulse of the gaming industry. Occasionally, that illusion is shattered and I have to go in for stitches. This is the case with Contract J.A.C.K. (Just Another Contract Killing), a stand-alone prequel to No One Lives Forever 2. Why was I not told about this title? Where was it at E3? A November 2003 release? WHAT? While I wait for the ambulance, here are the facts: They
call you Contract Jack (Just Another Contract Killer). You have a
reputation for being able to solve problems, particularly in cases of
questionable legality. But now you’ve got problems of your own.

Employ a deadly arsenal including the Bacalov Corrector, the prototype Cyclone Laser Rifle and powerful C4 charges. Ride into battle on vehicles with mounted weaponry. Compete online in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Demolition, and Doomsday modes. Create ‘mods’ and share them online using a complete suite of developer mod-making tools. Stand-alone
engine does not require players to own NOLF1 or NOLF2. Play through the events occuring immediately after NOLF1 and trigger the events found in NOLF2.
To say I’m a bit flabbergasted by the sudden appearance of this title would be an understatement. There’s also a promise of “more action, less stealth” which will please all those that want more straight-up action. Plus, you get to play a bad guy? Very cool. My only real concern would be with how the story fits in the No One Lives Forever (NOLF) story line. Unless this installment was planned all along but never implemented, will it be a shoehorn job, trying to tie the ends together in a neat package? And will Ms. Archer appear along the way? We’ll have to wait and see, but with Monolith’s record it will likely be a fun ride either way. It’s also good to see more mod support, which can extend the life of nearly any product if the base product sparks a bit of interest. The ambulance is just pulling up so I’ll end it here. We can expect Contract J.A.C.K. this November. - Omni (August 10, 2003) |
