Crash Day

Remember Stunts, the DOS-based PC game where you had to take a car and flip it around every which way, trying to do the most insane stunts possible off of ramps, slopes, and anything else that could hurdle your vehicle through the air?  Well, Moon Byte Studios /Replay Studios has a new game in the works for the PC that may just spark some fond memories for fans of the classic, as they work on their new stunt oriented game, Crash Day.

While this game will have a single player component to it, where it is really intended is for online play.  Regardless of what route a player decides to go, what they will encounter are gigantic maps where freedom is the name of the game.  One of the things that Crash Day is trying to emphasis is for players to just get behind the wheel of one of the game’s thirteen cars, and start driving, partaking in any of the stunt opportunities that come along.  Of course, for anyone that would rather crash things up whenever possible, as opposed to developing a finesse-oriented game, that’s fine too.

Whatever the case, Moon Byte is making sure to keep a close eye on how they handle physics in Crash Day, since this will be so important in performing stunts.  Interestingly, they are going for a more realist approach to the physics, as opposed to any sort of arcade-like, over-the-top approach.  Also, the game will have highly destructible cars, as players can smash them up mercilessly while driving around.

This is something to remember, though, as the game’s name is Crash Day, and not Stunt Day after all.  Crashing, smashing, and bashing the game’s cars is emphasized as a big part of

the game, as the developers are trying to make something reminiscent of Carmageddon in that regards.

Considering all of the stunts that players will be doing in the game, the developers will also be including a track editor so that players can make their own insane gauntlet of ramps, loops, and who knows what.  It’s expected that the editor will actually be quite powerful, as the ability to make tracks is a facet of the game that its developers are really trying to stress.  Hopefully, it will be relatively easy to make these available online so that people can download one

another’s courses.  What will likely get those interested in customizing things in-game salivating the most, though, is that once the game is released Moon Byte plans to make many of the game tools available for free so that people can make their own cars, and track pieces.

Despite all the talk of cars flying through the air, and smashing into stuff, there’s more to the game than that, as quite a number of game modes are planned for Crash Day.  There are the self-explanatory modes of Race mode, Stunt mode, Test Drive mode, and Capture the Flag mode.  On top of this, there is Pass the Bomb mode, which acts like a game of hot potato as you and your friends pass around a bomb, trying not to be the one holding it when the timer runs out.  This shouldn’t be confused with Speed the Bomb mode, which is like something out of a Keanu Reeves movie, as there’s a bomb in your car, and if you go too slow you’ll get blown up.  The goal of this mode is to last as long as you can on the correct route.  Finally, there is Knockout mode, where players race one another and the slowest person each lap is eliminated from the race.

It has been ages since Stunts came out, and since that time no one has ever been able to recreate what that game accomplished.  Hopefully Crash Day will be up to the task when it comes to rekindling gamers’ love for this sort of game.
