Usually
when playing a racing game and the notion of an endurance circuit comes
up players cringe in expectation of the 2-3 hour marathon that lays
ahead of them, as they play the same course methodically, slowly, but
surely, passing one placeholder opponent after the next until, after
what seems like an eternity, finally taking the lead; all in the name of
unlocking some special track or getting some fancy car that, as it turns
out, really isn’t all that fancy. Now our fine, feathered friends at Firetoad Software are taking a
stab at a racing game that is an endurance, trying to take an approach
to it that brings variety, and will hopefully prove to be fun instead of
a chore.
The
game rounds up 8 different characters that are all competing in a huge
televised race, trying to win the $1,000,000 grand prize. The way the races work, there are multiple vehicles on each
stretch, each with their own strong and weak points.Players must use them to get around the levels, often having to
get off one vehicle, go on foot for a time, then getting on another, so
it’ll be just as important to be able to track down the different
vehicles as it will be to navigate them well once you find them. One of the key features that Firetoad
is
including is something
called the “Fuel Meter”, which is a stamina meter. When it is full players will be able to travel at a full-on
sprint.But once it runs
out, they’re back to a more normal pace until the meter is
replenished; because of this players will have to learn to ration their
strength in order to place well in the race. It’s also being touted that there are no rules for the race,
and while no details as to just what this means have been given, it
certainly suggests less ethical avenues are more than welcome in order
to come in first, perhaps leading to a rational similar to that found in
the old Road Rash games.

Players
won’t be limited to only using ground-based vehicles in Fuel, however,
watercraft, and aviary vehicles will also be scattered throughout the
levels to be taken advantage of.So
far, the vehicles we know of that will be in the game include SUVs, dune
buggies, helicopters, and powerboats.
Usually
endurance races are a dark, scary thing that gamers shouldn’t even
joke about.Hopefully
Firetoad can deliver with Fuel so this doesn’t always have to be the
case.
