Hammer
and Sickle
For
as much popularity as role-playing games have had over the decades, one
would be hard pressed to find a title in the genre that takes
place in or around the present that doesn't involve spandex sporting
superheroes.That
being said, the folks at Nival Interactive have a new RPG that will pit
players in the cloak and dagger world of post war Germany with Hammer
and Sickle, a turn-based RPG, complete with destructible environments
that takes place in the Silent Storm universe.
With
the games events happening in 1949, players will be smack dab in the
middle of some very tense times in world history. The Cold War was really starting to pick up steam, both the
U.S.S.R. and America had the bomb, an arms race was starting, there’s
trouble brewing in Northern Korea, to put it simply, there was a whole
lot of trouble on the horizon. In
the game, though, it would appear that a group of Polish resistance
fighters who fought the Nazis during WWII have appeared, after being
thought dead.This has
Soviet high command
uneasy,
so they’ve sent a special operative (who you’ll play as) to try and
make contact with them.Of
course, it soon becomes apparent that something is very, very wrong, and
it’s up to the player to figure out what.
With
all of these spy elements in the game, tact is of the utmost importance,
as players need to know when to fight, and when to duck and cover. If one tries to be a one man army, and plough through every enemy
in their path, it will alert police, and possibly cause the local
military commander to send out patrols, making it far more difficult to
have secret meetings, get a hold

of
sensitive documents, and whatnot.As
such, it wouldn’t be a good idea to get into a firefight in the middle
of Town Square.Players
will need to pick their fights carefully in the game, so much so in
fact, that there is a meter in the game that fills up as players get
into unnecessary battles.Fill
the meter up, and it will set off WWIII.
Of
course, if a game is going to take place shortly after WWII, it’s a
given that players will expect a nice cache of period weaponry. So far, 90 weapons from the era are planned for the game, and
when players aren’t suiting up with a nice piece of heat, they’ll be
busy making a few bucks to bribe contacts, and hire soldiers.
With
the combination of a lot of cloak and dagger aspects, as well as the
more contemporary setting of Hammer and Sickle, RPG fans could have a
neat little treat in store.In
the meantime, we’ll just have to wait for the game to be completed to
see if it all comes together well.
