The Matrix Online

It looks like we haven’t seen the last of the “bogus” real world we live in, the promised reality that lies within the Matrix, and of course…Keanu Reeves’ spellbinding acting. Shortly before the release of Enter the Matrix, Ubi Soft announced another Matrix game during E3, which is taking a step into the online realm.

Ubi Soft has found enough assurance in the Matrix franchise that a possible MMORPG around the Matrix universe is in production. Little is known about the game; though what can be expected is a Star Wars: Galaxies mirror image, with Matrix characters replacing Star Wars creatures. Though that is only a speculated thought, Ubi Soft is pussyfooting around the very same idea.

In The Matrix Online, you will create your own character and then gain experience, weapons, and other items with other characters in the Matrix world. In this world your character can learn various combat forms and skill, which will be used when confronted by a fellow player. If all of this is sounding vaguely familiar, then you’ve already heard of a game like this, Star Wars: Galaxies. Like Galaxies, The Matrix Online will be an online-only game. The significance is that playing by yourself or a single player campaign will not be possible.

Instead, you can freely walk around interacting with other players completing missions with or against NPC’s, form your own factions, and do whatever else to achieve supremacy over other players. This gift of freedom might also come at a price, like Galaxies, allowing its online capabilities available through monthly payments. This is not confirmed, but an implemented feature in most online-only games.

The Matrix Online will most likely be released on the PC, with little chance of any console support. The game is scheduled to be released sometime in 2004.
