When
it comes to 3D space strategy games, Homeworld has set on hell of a
benchmark as to what gamers expect from the genre. It had intuitive controls, a nice technology tree, smart enemies,
and some intense, heated battles.Lemon
Interactive took a stab at the genre with Project Earth a while back to
mixed reviews, and now City Interactive, a developer comprised of a
number of former Lemon employees, is giving it another go with Project
Earth 2.
From
a narrative perspective the story for PE2 looks like it could be
interesting.Doing away
with the “fight back the alien armada” premise that has dug its
heels deep into, well, just about every genre in gaming, PE2 follows the
story of unjustly exiled people who just want to prove their innocence. How going to war will sway public opinion in the cosmos is
anyone’s guess, but it’ll be interesting to see if City Interactive
can make this plot work, and potentially quite satisfying if they pull
it off.
Little
is known in regards to the title’s gameplay, but it appears the game
is trying to cover all

the bases.The
challenge will come in making a game that stands out from the juggernaut
that is Homeworld while holding true to what makes the genre what it is.We’ll find out just how well this all gels when the game hits
store shelves at the end of the year.
