Nomads
Project
Nomads initially seems like your standard 3D RTS after reading the
features list. You need to
amass a strong army to conquer everyone and everything, but there is a
kicker—you do all of it on an airship.
The game appears to be a crazy hybrid between Skies of Arcadia
and the Civilization series.
A
once proud nation gets split apart by a tragedy and the survivors are
separated by floating islands in the sky.
At the beginning of the game you can choose from one of three
characters: Susie, the magical sorceress, John, a wizard with
engineering skills, or Goliath, the strong brute.
Your goal is to take one of those three characters and strengthen
your floating island into an empire and find your two lost friends.
The way you play the game will be determined by your character
selection.

The
method of building your empire is by stealing other island’s items
and/or airship or shatter hostile islands.
Collecting magical artifacts will support your weaponry and
defense as you will be able to produce machines, double-deckers and
zeppelins. This is where
the game looks like it will be similar to Civilization.
As
you conquer neighboring islands you will collect raw materials that come
in the form of energy, the game’s only resource.
With energy you can move and cast spells and supply your
buildings and units. With
such an emphasis on one resource, it should be a given that it will play
great strategic significance. |

The features sheet boasts that the input model is easy-to-learn. This will prove helpful as you will have full reign over every part of your army. But let’s hope micromanagement doesn’t bog down the whole experience. Being able to control everything that goes on is intriguing on paper, but more often than not it subtracts from the enjoyment factor.
The
aspect of the game that looks most appealing is the graphics engine.
The character models look cartoony from the screen shots, but the
environments look impressive. The
visual design is explained as, “Jules Verne technology and
supernatural wizardry.” You
will be able to see grass sway, birds fly, and after playing the game
long enough, you will become one with nature.
Weather
is supposed to be implemented into the game play as well.
The weather will change realistically as day blends to night.
There will be rain and your airship will swerve on a windy day,
possibly forcing a change in tactics.
A
release date has not been set for Project Nomads, but when it does
finally hit the streets, we'll let you know how it turns out. - Tim Martin (June 15, 2002) |
