Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

The war is on.  While it's uncertain whether Mythic Entertainment, with their upcoming MMORPG title, Warhammer Online:  Age of Reckoning, is attempting to take on a certain other MMORPG head to head or just hoping to cash in a little on said game's enormous success, it does seem like World of Warcraft will have a new rival in the MMO market come 2007.

For those bellicose types who felt WOW just didn't have enough killing for their tastes, WO: AOR promises even more, immersing players in "a world of perpetual conflict." (Hey, just like ours!)

Set in the Warhammer gaming world, Age of Reckoning presents its new Realm vs. Realm game play system, where players declare allegiance to one of six races, siding with Empire (Dwarf, High Elf, Empire Human) or Chaos (Greenskin, Dark Elf, Human Chaos Worshipper), then move to fighting an ancestral enemy anywhere in any number of different theatres of combat.

Realm vs. Realm allows a variety of combat and quest experiences in a system modeled on Dark Age of Camelot.  Unlike WOW, Age of Reckoning's conflicts will come in two integrated varieties, both on the same map: Player vs. Player combats, involving anything from limited skirmishes to huge campaigns with an enemy's capital as the

goal, and Player vs. Environment quests of various scales and complexities.  Besides duking it out with other players, players will meet NPC mercenaries called the Dogs of War who will point balance particular scenarios, solving those inevitable personnel issues (ie. waiting for enough people to join a
game to begin).

The game's new combat system seems both robust and complex, allowing players to earn combat powers and learn morale skills to give themselves the edge over their adversaries.

The game art and modelling, if the website is any proof, seem impressive, detailed and distinctive.  Character models are apparently customizable and will even change to show character development (ie. longer, shaggier Dwarf beards.)   The title seems to retain much of the dark humor and panache that's attracted players to Warhammer for the past twenty-five years.  If the website's forum is any evidence, there is a great deal of buzz and anticipation already.

While I don't reckon that Age of Reckoning will have much of a chance of knocking off WOW or its expansions that come out before Fall 2007, it at least will provide an alternative for those who like their war straight with no chaser.
