The Witcher

A vast majority of RPGs that get released in North America that happen to have ties to some sort of literary work usually wind up being tied to the Forgotten Realms.  Like it or lump it, that’s just the way it has been.  Now, Polish developer CD Projekt Red have a little something up their sleeves bucking the trend called The Witcher for the PC, based on the works of fantasy novelist Andrzej Sapkowski.

As one might suspect, the game follows a man simply known as the Witcher, a member of an ancient group who protect the realm’s people from werewolves, the undead, and other things that go bump in the night.  He isn’t in it for the glory, but rather the money, treating each case more so like a job than a passion.  It looks like he has his work cut out for him too. A well-known seer is prophesying that the realm will soon be plunged into the Time of White Cold and White Light, where snow, frost, and glaciers will destroy the world.  On top of this,

there are monsters long though extinct appearing everywhere.  Now the Witcher has to figure out what is going on.

The game is slated to be an action RPG, with an emphasis on intuitive ease of use.  This formula has worked well in the past with games like Diablo and Elder Scrolls III, hopefully what CD Projekt Red has planned for The Witcher will prove to allow players to dive into their game  just as quick.  Combat is planned to be smooth, and quick, with the Witcher’s moves being motion captured by someone who is a professional with medieval swordplay.

One other area where the developer is hoping this game will stand out is in terms of graphics.  At this point, the game is looking very nice, especially looking at its water, and the use of lighting.  Hopefully, by the time the game is finished, tweaked, and ready to ship it will look even better.  There is no word yet as to when the game is going to hit store shelves in North America.
