Looking
for a game that lets you wander the stars as an intergalactic privateer
can be pretty tough these days. One
of the few series that’s still fighting the good fight for this genre
is the X series from EgoSoft, which allows players to get down to
business at their own pace with its incredibly open-ended style. Now, a new edition is coming to the series with X3: Reunion.
With
this third installment in the franchise, Egosoft is overhauling just
about everything that has been found in previous X games. From a purely technological standpoint, X3 will have a nice,
shiny new graphics engine, enhancing the whole look of the game.Previous titles have had some very impressive visuals, and
looking at the images that Egosoft has made available for X3, what they
have so far is looking quite nice.
However,
it isn’t just what players see on screen that will be getting a
facelift.The game’s
economy will be getting tweaked, as war will now have a noticeable
affect on global economies.NPCs
will also have a stronger role as they conduct trade, wreck havoc as
pirate cartels,
or start up factories.In
terms of gameplay, the overall goal of X3 appears to be providing a far
smarter game than its predecessors.
Of
course, one of the things that the X series has become most well known
for is its story.In X3,
things are looking a little rough for the Argon fleet as their forces
are beginning to be spread thin, as they continue their conflict with
the Khaak.Making things even more complicated, though, is that there is
a new, mysterious force coming on to the scene which could be yet
another threat to the region.

In
terms of privateer games that more or less leave things up to the player
as to how one wants to tackle the game, there really aren’t a lot of
options out there.Up to
this point, the X series has done a pretty good job of filling the void,
hopefully X3: Reunion will be able to continue this when it is released
later this year.

Features:
-
Universe design:
X³:Reunion will allow much more dramatic changes to the map of the universe than would otherwise would have been possible. Sectors will look significantly different from what you are used to. More details about this shortly.
-
Economy:
We are now able to completely redesign prices and productivity relations of factories. A new team of programmers from devnet put together a great concept for a modified economy and we can now combine this with some innovations to greatly improve the complexity of the X universe economy. Part of this project is also to allow much greater modifications in the universe. A war can now destroy factories and the game will automatically find measures to put the economy back into a balance...
-
Graphic engine:
We plan to greatly improve the visual look of the X universe. Our new completely Direct X 9 based graphic engine will allow much higher detailed objects and usage of shaders for special effects.
-
User Interface:
The user interface is another important reason for the move towards X³:Reunion. As you may have read in some interviews already, we have been experimenting with new menus and innovative ways to control the game. Many of these concepts however would not have been possible inside the X²: The Return framework. Everything would have had to remain compatible with the ways of X².
