Lair
When dragon-riding and video games come to mind the first game that will spring into most people’s minds is Panzer Dragoon. It pretty much set the gold standard for what this sort of game could be. There have been other games to try this, but most have performed poorly. However, this isn't stopping Factor 5 from taking a kick at the can with their entry into this niche genre (if you can even call it a genre) with Lair for the PlayStation 3.

The game does appear to have that “Shucks, that’s pretty!” quality to it that a lot of the first generation PS3 games are sporting, but from what we’ve been able to see of the game’s visual style thus far it also looks like the developers are trying to keep the art direction more unique that many of the other games out there right now. more
unusual than the standard fantasy fair, more like what one may expect to
see in a bizarre dream than a swords and sorcery sort of game.
Another
interesting touch is how combat will be approached in Lair.
Usually dragon-riding games simply involve flying around and
shooting fireballs at enemies. That’s still present in this game, but there will also be
close up hand-to-hand combat where players have their dragon smash and
claw at the other monsters. There
will even be the ability to perform combos while doing this.
While flying around, the controls will make use of the tilt
sensor in the Sixaxis as well, so players will get to lean back and
forth while soaring through the air.
By
the looks of things, Lair could be another high-quality game to hit the
PlayStation 3’s library. Up
to this point, triple A titles have been far and few between for the
console. Hopefully this effort from Factor 5 will help to change that.
In the very least, it looks like a more refined spin on the
dragon-riding game that could be a refreshing change from its
counterparts.
