Resistance 2

The dust has settled, and the verdict is long since in for Resistance on the PlayStation 3.  All throughout its development, the game garnered heated debate as to whether the original gameplay footage used to promote the game at E3 was real time or pre-rendered.  When the game finally came out, the general consensus was that the graphics were pretty darn good, and the gameplay wasn’t too shabby.  With respectable reviews, the game sold well enough to warrant making a sequel.

Resistance 2 will take place right where the first game left off.  Shifting venues, we’ll see the series protagonist, Sergeant Nathan Hale, head to America where he will join up with a special defense force called The Sentinels, who are preparing for an inevitable attack from the invading alien forces of the Chimera.

Before long, the Chimera launches their attack on the US, hitting the country simultaneously from both coasts.  It’s at this time that players step into the fray, and Resistance 2 begins.

As far as single-player gaming is concerned, it looks like the game’s developer, Insomniac Games, wants to keep the core elements of Resistance intact, while expanding on it though more weapons, bigger environments, and so forth.  Two areas that are being emphasized for their improvements this time around are the graphics in Resistance 2, as well as its AI.  There are plans to significantly improve the game’s visuals this time around, and AI will be scaling, with nearby enemies performing more sophisticated attacks than those that are far away.  One other interesting thing to note is that some gigantic bosses are planned for the game also.

What really seems to be getting a lot of attention for Resistance 2 are its multiplayer elements.  There are a variety of competitive and cooperative online options that are being implemented here.  So far, we know there will be a squad-based mode that supports up to 60 players, and there is also a new cooperative mission mode being planned.  In co-op mode, we’ll see a number of specific classes available such as soldiers, special ops, and medics, and the online servers are being tweaked for speed, especially in regards to streamlining matchmaking.

It doesn’t appear that Insomniac is planning to veer too far off from the original Resistance, instead focusing on improving what was found in the game, and enhancing the online play in Resistance 2.  Fans will be able to decide for themselves how well the studio pulled this off when the game comes out this Fall.
