Coded
Arms
When
a developer has tried to put a first person shooter on a portable system
in the past, sometimes the whole thing just turned into a gigantic pain in
the ass.Usually the
screen would be way too small, and players would be squinting, trying to
make out what is going on.Now
we have the PSP with its relatively gigantic screen, clocking in with a
diagonal over four inches long.With
that, Konami has a new FPS on the way for Sony’s handheld called Coded
Arms.
The
game starts out with a hacker busting into a seemingly abandoned
computer system.In it a
small army of enemies attacks him.The whole thing is very William Gibson-esque; though don’t
expect any silver-eyed lasses named Molly to come in and save the day.The whole reason for hacking into the mainframe is that
originally it was designed to run simulations for the military on
fighting off an alien invasion.Unfortunately
now the project
has
been dropped, but the computer seems to be evolving on its own.(Ed. Evolving?Wintermute?Hmmmm…)As such, someone has to go in and figure out what’s going on.
While
players can expect a healthy variety of weapons to run around with, the
real question on most people’s minds will be how Coded Arms
stands out from other first person shooters. The answer to this would be randomly generated dungeons.Instead of having preset stages, players will run around levels
unique to one another as they are whipped together by the PSP.Hopefully this will add something new to the genre.

In
any case, we still have a few months of waiting to do before Coded
Arms is released.In
the meantime, here’s to hoping the game turns out to be a worthwhile
FPS.
