Dungeons
and Dragons: Tactics
Dungeons and Dragons is one of those licenses that has managed to find its way onto just about every possible game platform at some point in history. It’s a popular brand, and, more importantly, it’s profitable. However, up to this point its presence has been conspicuously absent from the PSP’s library. To remedy the situation, Atari is bringing Dungeons and Dragons: Tactics to the handheld later this year.
The game is focused on the 3.5 rule set as it dictates how players conduct themselves. Players will control a party of six characters that can consist of all of the normal races and job classes usually found in a Dungeons and Dragons game, with the inclusion of Psionic Warriors and Psions. As their names suggest, they excel in using the power of their minds. All of the usual rules will be in place such as chance to hit, encumbrances, and dictating the order in which characters can act. Also, the game will support a six player multiplayer mode where each player controls one of the six party members.

Gameplay itself is much as one might expect from a strategy RPG, with the requisite grid-based system for moving characters around from one square to the next. Once the character has reached his or her destination they can perform an action. It’s not too different from what one would find in a game like Final Fantasy Tactics, except that the visuals are decidedly less cute here. |

All
the while, players will be exploring an entirely new realm in the
D&D universe that was created specifically for this game.
Players will wander various locales one would expect to stumble
across in a fantasy-based game such as dingy dungeons, caverns, castles,
and so forth. There will
also be the option to be good or evil in the game, as is the norm in
most D&D adventures.
When
not taking part in the main quest of the game, players will have a
variety of multiplayer options available to them.
Besides the cooperative mode mentioned earlier, players will also
be able to take place in death matches, treasure hunts, and last man
standing competitions. There
will also be an option that allows players to trade items among
themselves.
Those
wallowing over the dearth of D&D games on the PSP haven’t much
longer to wait in order to get a hold of Dungeons and Dragons: Tactics.
The game is due out in North America at the end of May 2007.
