R-Type Command
After making a name for itself as a space shooter, the R-Type series is going off in a totally new, not to mention unexpected, direction: turn based strategy. Yup, lots of hex grids, and mulling over one’s next move in the vast, virtual vacuum of R-Type space. The big question, though, is if this game will turn out well, or just wind up being an attempt to cash in on the success of the franchise’s name.

While there is a hex-styled layout for the various missions, the style of the different sorties still has an underlying space shooter vibe to them. be the ability to earn some sort of currency in the game that can be used to upgrade ships, or buy new ones.
What will likely prove interesting with R-Type Command is that this will be the first time that players can take control of the series villainous aliens, the Bydos. It’s unclear whether the Bydos will have a single-player campaign, or if they are only for the ad-hoc multiplayer mode in the game, but it should help add a bit more variety to the title.
The bottomline, though, is that there just isn’t a whole lot of info to go on with this game besides “Shucks, it’s an R-Type strategy game". What little we do know looks like they’re trying to make it interesting, but we’ll just have to see it for ourselves when it comes out in May.
