Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny

It’s a bit surprising that Namco has taken so many years to bring their Soul Calibur series to the PSP, but it has finally happened with Broken Destiny.  Headed to the PSP, the game will bring the core features that have made the franchise so popular to the handheld system.  Coming along for the ride are at least two new characters to play as, as well as some graphical tweaks.

All of the play modes we’ve come to expect from a Soul Calibur game will be present in Broken Destiny with arcade, versus, and survival modes being included.  There will also be an ad hoc feature so players can compete against their friends when they come over, but we haven’t heard if there will be a full-on wi-fi mode in the game.  There is also a tutorial mode planned for those not familiar with the series, or that have been out of the loop for a while.

Of course, one of the main things people want to know when a new fighting game is announced is what the roster of characters will look like.  So far, it appears that at least 20 characters will be available to play as in the game, though that number could leap to 30.  Many of those present will be old favorites from Soul Calibur, but there are two new inclusions in Broken Destiny.  The first is a totally new

character named Dampierre, a rather aristocratic looking fellow with a pair of blades up is sleeves, and sporting a well-groomed moustache.  The other new character actually came as a surprise as Namco announced that God of War’s Kratos will be playable in the game.

There are also plans for a few tweaks of Broken Destiny’s visuals such as lighting effects that will help depict the time of day.  Overall, though the game is looking quite good on the handheld with a lot more detail than one might expect, but it is Soul Calibur, and the series has always looked good, so perhaps we shouldn’t be all that surprised.

As was mentioned earlier, it’s hard to believe that it took Namco so long to finally decide to bring Soul Calibur to the PSP.  The system has had a decent number of fighting games head its way, but seldom were they big name franchises.  Perhaps it’s better late than never that it’s finally happening.
