Wipeout Pure

Throughout the Playstation's hayday, the Wipeout series enjoyed a very comfortable position among racing titles on the system.  Between the mind-numbing speed, and well laid out tracks, not to mention the combat, race fans had quite the visceral experience at their disposal.  However, after Wipeout XL there just wasn't a whole lot going on with the series.  Fans had to wait for what seemed like an eternity for the PS2 version of the game to hit the streets (no thanks to problems with getting the game published), and when it did come out, a lot of long-time Wipeout enthusiasts weren't too pleased with what they saw, as the game didn't have the right feel to it that made the franchise so appealing in the past.  Now, the series is about to make its return with Wipeout Pure on the PSP, which promises to bring the game back to its roots.

The game will have a mix of new tracks, as well as a number of classic courses from the series, all with quite a long draw distance so players don't have to worry about smashing into any unexpected corners.  Interestingly, developers are strongly pushing for there to be a lot of downloadable content for the game after its release, also, which will range from new courses, to new racers, wallpapers, and so forth.

Another strong point of the game will be its support of up to eight players simultaneously, thanks to the PSP's WiFi capabilities.  With all of these options, combined with a back to basics sensibility, Wipeout Pure may just remind long-time fans why they loved the franchise in the first place when it hits the streets later this Spring.
