Arc the Lad: End of Darkness

It’s only been in the last five years or so that the Arc the Lad series has been making any waves in North America.  Before the release of Arc the Lad Collection on the PlayStation, only diehard followers of the franchise really had any idea what the long-running strategy RPG series was all about.  The last entry we saw in the series was Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, which was fairly well-liked for its old school, straightforward approach, and now the series is returning to the world of that game with Arc the Lad: End of Darkness for the PlayStation 2.

Taking place in the same world as Twilight of the Spirits, five years after the events of that game, End of Darkness stars a young man named Edda who up to this point in his life has been living the boring island life.  One day he discovers an ill mannered girl named Kirika washed up on a beach, and a short time later runs across the girl again, suspiciously near the dead body of a hunter that Edda was helping in the forest.  Not too long after this, Edda becomes a fully qualified exorcist, and begins the life of a hunter, and with these new

skills he heads out to save the world from its weakened state, which ultimately turns into a conflict between nature and civilization.

Where End of Darkness will differ from all previous Arc the Lad games is that this time the game will be an action RPG, instead of pursuing the usual strategy route.  With this, the game will play out substantially faster, as players zip around beating down enemies, performing combos, and completing missions so to become stronger.  Also, players will be able to collect cards, where up to four can be equipped, resulting in certain skills becoming useable.

Another interesting diversion from past Arc the Lad games is that in End of Darkness players will be able to go online and play competitive and cooperative games.  They won’t all necessarily be time consuming matches either, as there will be the option for quick match-ups for those on a tight schedule.

After years of forging its path as one of the most popular strategy RPG series in Japan, it will be interesting to see what an action RPG Arc the Lad is like.  With the online play options, and introduction of combos, hopefully this is a sign that End of Darkness is more than just an action RPG being made just for the sake of being an action RPG.
