Breath of Fire V

Breath of Fire V, announced at E3, is said to be the latest installment of the highly acclaimed RPG series that debuted in 1993 with the same name. Since 1993, many innovations and inventions have occurred in the gaming market. Breath of Fire will feature new innovative gameplay, new style of gameplay mechanics, enhanced visuals, and an impressive story line.

The newest Breath of Fire game takes place on Earth. The story begins after an ecological catastrophe has occurred forcing civilization underground. As time passes, no one has been on the surface of the Earth and no one knows what life used to be like. You play the role of Ryu (an underground Ranger for the underground society) who accidentally discovers something during his daily routine. Ryu becomes suspicious of what lurks on the surface of the Earth and Ryu is forced to fight through monsters of the underground in order to make it to the surface.

Breath of Fire V features four new types of gameplay additions, which include P.E.T.S. (Positive Encounter and Tactics System), Survival Gameplay, Ability Point System, and S.O.L. (Scenario Overlay System). The “PETS” system is a very cool new innovation used in next generation RPG’s. Players can set up ambushes, decoys, and traps prior to a battle with monsters. The “Survival Game Play Mode” challenges players with a large amount of enemies and gives the player the choice to attack, avoid enemies, or lay traps against the enemies.

The “Ability Point System” is an important part of the gameplay in this game. As players progress further into the game they may collect more ability points. All potions, attacks, and actions require a certain amount of ability points. Naturally the more ability points you accumulate the more powerful attacks you can unleash. The Scenario Overload system adds a realistic feeling into the game as your actions determine what you will ponder on as you progress further and further into this game. In-game events and dungeons will change accordingly based on what you have accomplished previously in the game.

With an impressive amount of RPG’s on the Playstation 2 it should be interesting to see where Breath of Fire fits. Capcom has a lot of great competition on the Playstation 2, but more competition means better games.

Breath of Fire V is set to release in February of 2003.
