Talk
to most fans of the Castlevania series, and they’ll quickly tell you
how Symphony of the Night was by far the best game ever released for the
franchise.The sheer level
of depth that game had has made it a very difficult achievement to
repeat, and has caused many to have very high expectations of what a
Castlevania game should be.In
the meantime, many games in the series have shifted into the world of
full-on 3D, departing from the 2D perspective used in Symphony of the
Night, leaving a bit of a bitter taste in some people’s mouths.Nonetheless, Konami is forging on, trying to make a 3D
Castlevania game that has just as much, if not more, appeal than the
series high point.With
that, the publisher has a new installment in the works for the
PlayStation 2 called Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, which series
creator, Koji Igarashi, insists will be just as in-depth as its PSX
predecessor.
In
Curse of Darkness, players will take control of a Devil Forgemaster
named Hector, who studied his craft under the tutelage of Dracula. In time, though, Hector became disenchanted with all the evil
and what not, so chose to walk away from it all. However, three years later, Dracula has been killed by the Belmonts,
and in that time one of Hector’s fellow pupils,
Isaac, has become
none too pleased about Hector turning his back on evil.As such, Isaac has hunted down Hector’s loved ones and killed
them, and now it is up to the Devil Forgemaster gone good to exact revenge.
Curse
of Darkness will be an action / adventure game at its heart with plenty
of enemies to smash, but there will be other elements to the game as
well.Firstly, it will have players accumulating experience points so to level-up Hector.Along the way, it will become apparent that certain areas of
the game will only become accessible once players have reached a high

enough level.Of course,
seeing as
Hector is a Devil Forgemaster, his profession will also afford certain
abilities that can be used in the game. The most notable one of these that we know of so far is that
players will be able to summon demons that can be controlled in battle.
At
this point, there is a lot that isn’t known about Castlevania: Curse
of Darkness, but that is to be expected considering that in all
likelihood, most information of interest for the game will become
available about a month from now at E3.In the meantime, there isn’t a terribly long wait ahead of us
before this latest installment of Castlevania hits the streets, as it is
currently set for a Q4 2005 release.
