Boy,
Capcom sure seems bent on making a sword-swinging action game that can
compete toe-to-toe with Koei’s Dynasty Warriors series. The Osaka-based publisher has already tried once with Chaos
Legions, and failed.Now
they’re picking themselves up, brushing themselves off, and giving it
another go, this time with Devil Kings on the PlayStation 2.
Capcom
seems to be taking a bit of a paint by numbers approach to development
on this game, putting in all of the elements that one would expect from
an action game where players hack their way through hordes of enemies. There will be a number of heroes that players can choose to play
as, each with their own special style of fighting. As players make their way through the game with their character
of choice, he or she will slowly gain levels, and become increasingly
powerful in the stats department.Also,
with the game throwing scores of enemies at the player, they will have a
variety of special moves that they can
unload
so to really send their attackers reeling. The other feature that will seem awfully familiar when players
see it is that there are various features that can be unlocked over the
course of the game so long as players meet certain conditions during a
mission.
Now,
all of this looks fine and dandy, but the problem is that we’ve
already seen all of this in Dynasty Warriors. There’s already scores of different heroes in that game with
their own unique style of fighting, they all have different special
moves, they level up, and there are tons of things that players can
unlock

while
they play the game.How
does Capcom expect to stand out from the crowd with Devil Kings when
their game plays so similarly to the long-running Koei franchise.
The
most logical guess as to how Capcom can make Devil Kings stand out is by
beating Koei at their own game: make a far more refined product. With the Dynasty Warriors series, the overall theme has stayed
the same for quite some time now, but Koei constantly tweaks and refines
every last nuance of the game a little more with each installment. If Capcom is going to make Devil Kings with the features
they’ve mentioned thus far, they’re going to have to make sure it
plays smoother, has better combat, and provides an all together stronger
experience than the Dynasty Warrior series if they want their game to
succeed.
