For
many, Final Fantasy VII is their favorite game in the long-running
Square RPG franchise.While
ensemble casts were nothing new to the series, there was something very
likeable about the various characters in the game that endeared them to
a generation of gamers…and unfortunately submitted the rest of us to
legions of message board / online gaming alias with either “Cloud”
or “Sephiroth” in their name.Whatever
the case, there’s no denying that a lot of people out there really
liked FFVII, and with that it appears Square-Enix sees the dollar
signs in that, as they are currently working on
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (Yeah, the name doesn't flow
too well. Hopefully they'll switch "FFVII" and
"Dirge of Cerberus" around before the game is released), which takes place three years after the original
game.
However,
just because this game has “Final Fantasy” in the name, it doesn’t
mean this will be a RPG.In
fact, Dirge of Cerberus is slated to be a third person action
shooter.This is
certainly
an abrupt about face from what a lot of people may expect, but in this
game players take control of Vincent, the mysterious gunslinger, decked
out in red from Final Fantasy VII.There is talk of the game having some RPG elements, as well as a
strong emphasis on story, but for the most part, players will be running
into situations guns blazing.
Up
to this point, everyone is staying tight-lipped as to the nitty-gritty
details of the game.As to which FFVII characters will appear in the game along side Vincent,
the only one that is confirmed at this point is Cait

Sith,
the little black cat.In
terms of story, all that we know is that the game takes place three
years after FFVII, and Vincent is trying to discover the mysteries
lurking beneath the ruins of Midgard.
Those
interested in Dirge of Cerberus will just have to wait until the
Tokyo Games Show this year, where Square-Enix plans to really show off
the game, along with its other projects in their Compilations of Final
Fantasy VII series, which is attempting to flesh out the FFVII
mythology. There’s no word on when this game will see a North American
release, but for all of the Final Fantasy VII fans out there, the only
date they’ll give is “Not soon enough”.
