Jak II
Let's face it -
3D platformers are kids games. Spyro? Crash? Blinx? No Eminem loving
thirteen year old wants to be anywhere near those guys. So, in an effort
to snag adolescents away from their Grant Theft Autos and Mortal Kombats,
Naughty Dog has decided to darken the atmosphere of Jak II. That's not
to say our elf friend will be dismembering everything in sight, but
design is much more mature than the usual googly eyed stuffed animals
that we're used to controlling in this genre.
At the end of
the original Jak and Daxter, our two heroes stepped off into an unknown
portal. Turns out that this leads to a dystrophic future that is being
overrun by the evil Baron Praxis. It's not long before Jak is captured,
and with the help that wisecracking little weasel-thing, must escape and
carry on their usual bout of jumping heroics. This time, you'll even
have artificial intelligence companions to help you.
Since its reigns
have been freed from being cutesy, this sequel take a note from Ratchet
and Clank and gives Jak has access to his own small arsenal of weaponry.
Our hero can also tap

into his dark side, allowing different moves and
powered up methods of destruction. At some point in the game, you can
even travel back in time, though the effects of this have not yet been
detailed. And having seen the success of various extreme sports games,
Jak can use his hover board to jet around the city, or just do tricks to
impress the ladies.
Being that the
original Jak and Daxter was pretty much just an update of Crash
Bandicoot, Naughty Dog is going the extra mile to make the sequel stand
out amongst all of the other platformers that'd we've had to endure over
the past year, so hopefully it'll turn out to be more than just another
"run/jump/collect items" non-epic. Jak II will begin the
holiday season early with a September release.
